The Supreme Court has put a plea related to NEET PG 2024 exams on 4 October. The petition, filed by NEET PG aspirants like Ishika Jain, demands more transparency in the examination process. It also demands the disclosure of answer keys and question papers besides standards of marks due to changes in the exam structure.
The National Board of Education for Medical Sciences had divided the NEET PG exam into two parts. This has been a much-contested step by the board. Senior Advocate Vibha Datta Makhija and Advocate Tanvi Dubey appeared for the petitioners and argued that such a last-minute modification in the pattern of the exam has caused confusion and uncertainty among the students. This is where Makhija emphasized the call for standardized procedure since, according to his observation, there are no formal rules that govern the exam, based on a probably changeable information bulletin.
Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud expressed his opinion during preliminary hearings that, “they had changed things at the wrong time and that structure could not have been altered just three days to the test, resulting in extreme distress to the students”. “It is very unusual,” the Chief Justice pointed out while questioning the rationale of such a decision.
It is claimed that no unusual practice had taken place, which is what the Bench dismissed. The case, originally set for September 27, was last postponed to October 4.
This year’s NEET PG exam, which was held in two shifts, was already under the scanner due to reports of suspicious low rankings received by the students. The NBEMS has implemented normalization, but doubts regarding this very process keep haunting the applicants who look forward to getting admission into postgraduate medical courses.
With hearing scheduled, many aspirant medical students have now spread hopes for a resolution that would ensure fairness and transparency in the NEET PG selection process.
