The University of Minnesota secures its top-tier standing in the 2025 U.S. News rankings, reflecting its commitment to excellence in education, research, and community engagement. Key rankings highlight U of M's leading role across its campuses in the Midwest and national programs.

Building on the success of further research and education, once again the University of Minnesota (U of M) has placed itself at one of the top American Institutions in the 2025 Best Colleges rankings of US News & World Report. The continuous recognition of such an institution by the university is the result of extensive efforts put in by their faculty, staff, and leadership in fulfilling their institution’s mission in providing excellent and quality education, leading ground-breaking research, and advancing community partnerships in the whole state of Minnesota and farther

According to President Rebecca Cunningham, this achievement “is a reflection of the extraordinary momentum we are building across the University of Minnesota System. They shine a light on our strong commitment to affordable, high-quality education that transforms lives and highlight our work to create new knowledge, address global challenges, develop technologies, and enhance quality of life for Minnesotans and people everywhere.”

Campus Rankings

In the 2025 rankings, some U of M campuses stood out with specific recognition:

  • The Crookston Campus ranked third in Top Public Schools in the Regional Colleges (Midwest) category. Over 25 years, the school has remained in the top four. This year it ranked No. 27 among Regional Colleges (Midwest) and No. 23 in Social Mobility in the same region.
  • Duluth Campus: The Duluth campus moved to No. 20 in Regional Universities (Midwest) after showing consistent improvement for the third year in succession. It also ranked No. 4 in Top Public Schools and No. 8 in Best Colleges for Veterans in the region, meaning that growing interest was also coupled with greater commitment to military personnel.

Morris Campus: Morris was ranked No. 7 in the Top Public Schools category for National Liberal Arts Colleges, which reflects its liberal arts education commitment.

Twin Cities Campus: The flagship campus ranked No. 23 in Top Public National Universities for the third consecutive year. Some of the strongest programs on campus were Business, Nursing, Economics, Psychology, Computer Science, and Engineering, which finished nationally at No. 18, No. 19, No. 30, No. 29, No. 34, and No. 27, respectively. The Twin Cities campus ended at No. 30 in best colleges for veterans.

The University’s Rochester campus is accredited through the Twin Cities campus, so rankings in the Twin Cities are part of its total ranking.

The U.S. News rankings examine graduation rates, student debt, faculty resources, and expert opinion, which emphasize the commitment of the University of Minnesota to comprehensive educational excellence.
