A study by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras has found that providing a volatile business with an environment where the creative and expressive sides of the employees are fostered could be an effective way of managing it.Led by Professor V Vijayalakshmi and her doctoral student Janani M, the study examines how the high and low phases of markets and businesses could leave permanent imprints on the well-being and productivity of employees.

The researchers are of the view that to help employees sustain potential and motivation amidst stressful work environments, companies should empower their employees through times of crisis with joyful, experiential, and artistic therapies.Compared to traditional training methods, experiential and artistic methods can induce a positive affect, stimulate creativity and innovation, and have the advantages of metaphors and improvisation in increasing one’s thoughts and behaviors at work.

Engagement in the arts provides a psychologically safe space for the exploration of an alternate reality that may assist employees in proactive behaviors, such as identification of future changes and challenges, and problem-solving.The research claims that multiple felt experiences may happen when the employees engage themselves with integrated forms of art. For example, self, people, space, and materials.

The concept of “Workforce Agility” has been brought out in the research, which would foster Constructive ways of dealing with Organizational Challenges rather than being resistant to them. The approach can assist businesses in responding to different opportunities and threats related to the competitive business environment.

IIT Madras’s research comes out to highlight possible benefits accuracy from integrating art and experiential therapies into the workplace, hence improving the performance and well-being of employees. It can create a much more enriching work environment by allowing the employees to have a platform for expressing and finding their feelings and thoughts, thereby achieving the full potential of the employees.

In other words, the study concludes that the expression of creative and artistic sides of the employees is the sure way to execute a volatile business and maximize the employee’s potential through art therapy and experience therapy.
