These two of the most prestigious competitions held in Isfahan, Iran, and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, respectively, have brightened the brighter facets of young minds from India.

International Physics Olympiad 2024

At the IPhO, conducted from July 21 to July 29, Indian participants won two gold and three silver medals to finish fourth with Vietnam. This event had participation from 193 students across 43 countries, with China at the top, followed by Russia and Romania in the second and third positions, respectively,.

The stiff competition consisted of a 5-hour grueling theoretical examination that included complex problems related to global warming, ion trapping, binary star dynamics, apart from an experimental section that tested their skills in heat conduction and diffraction.

Marking the consistency of India’s performance at IPhO, its historical record is 41% gold, 42% silver, and 11% bronze over the last 25 years. Just in the last decade, Indian students have achieved 46% gold and 52% silver medals, which underlines the commitment to excellence in science education that this country is chasing after.

While the IAChO from July 21 to July 30, the Indian team has done equally well by returning with one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal, whose winners include: Gold Medal: Devesh, Jalgaon (Maharashtra)Silver Medals: Avaneesh, Kota, Rajasthan; Harshin, Hyderabad, TelanganaBronze Medal: Kashyap, Mumbai, Maharashtra.

The competition problems included both theoretical and practical tasks. Among others, participants were asked to identify pH transitions by thin layer chromatography and mass-based titrations.

The performance of India in the IChO, over the years, has been impressive, with 29% of students winning gold medals and 53% silver and 18% bronze since its inception. If we look at the last ten appearances alone, these percentages are 33% and 57% respectively for gold and silver medals.
