Introducing NAAC’s New Binary Accreditation System for Colleges and Universities in India
Share
For the first time in the annals of the education sector in India, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council has introduced a Binary Accreditation System for the universities and colleges in the country. It is all set to start functioning from September 2024 with the principal objective of improving the quality and standards of institutions of higher education.

This binary accreditation system will make the process of accreditation simple and more streamlined for every college and university. Institutions will fall under two categories: ‘A’ category and ‘B’ category. Two categories, on the basis of all-around evaluation in parameters such as infrastructure, quality of faculties, research output, performance of students, etc.
The manifold advantages that this new system is likely to bring about in the higher education sector in India are multifold. It will institutionally provide a well-defined and transparent framework for the quality assessment of institutions, which shall help students, parents, and other stakeholders make better and more accurate decisions. This binary distinction will further function as a benchmark that will support institutions’ striving toward continuous improvement and excellence.
Further, the Binary Accreditation System will increase the healthy competition amongst colleges and universities, as the institutions will strive to acquire and sustain the higher ‘A’ category status. This will bring in more facility in infrastructure, faculty development programmes, research facilities, and the overall academic ambience of an institution.
Among the major moves in this regard, towards the realization of quality and relevance in Indian higher education, is the Binary Accreditation System. It finds relevance in the vision of the government for the promotion of excellence and innovation in the education sector. There will be fuel added to the overall growth and development in the country’s education system with a clear accreditation framework under the system.
The modalities relating to the Binary Accreditation System—things like the exact criteria that will be used for categorization and evaluation—shall be declared by NAAC closer to September 2024. The institutions are, therefore, advised to keep themselves abreast of the official announcements and guidelines that shall be issued by NAAC from time to time for facilitating a smooth transition to the new system of accreditation.
Thus, the induction of NAAC’s new Binary Accreditation System into the working mechanism of colleges and universities across the country is a landmass step toward the quest for quality education. The new policy has, other than making the process of accreditation much easier, brought in transparency and encourages institutions to strive toward excellence. This makes it incumbent upon the colleges and universities to keep themselves updated about the guidelines and criteria enunciated by NAAC, so that the transition to the new policy becomes a smooth one, since the implementation is scheduled to take place in September 2024.
