Kerala to Have Campus Industry Parks in Educational Institutions

Share

The government of Kerala is going to set up campus industry parks within educational institutions across the state. The main objective of this initiative is solving problems associated with limited industrial land and breaking the silos between academia and industry.

Key Details:The program was inaugurated by Kerala Law and Industries Minister P. Rajeeve. He termed the launching of the program as a historic step that would make a huge difference to the future of industries in Kerala.

Already, 80 educational institutions have come forward with proposals to start campus industry parks and 25 of them would get sanction this year itself. The government has the freedom to sanction more parks if they turn out to be exceptionally promising.

Decisions for these parks came after elaborate consultations with experts from the industry and area-level deliberations, which decided what ails the industry and what it requires. This helped evolve a new industry policy.

The campus industry parks would be set up on the available land in the institutions, many of which have excess land than the prescribed limit by the governing bodies.

These parks will try to fortify the academic frameworks by providing hands-on training to the students in topics directly related to their courses. The idea is to commercialise the research topics of the students and provide them with practical, course-related training.

Infrastructure development incentives up to Rs 1.5 crore per institution from the Government will be made available for the development of these parks.

Benefits and Significance:These campus industry parks will act like the missing link between academics and industry, providing hands-on training for the students and commercializing their research topics .

The parks thus would surmount the shortage of industrial land in the State of Kerala and also motivate a spirit of entrepreneurship among the students.

This will help cement the industrial sector’s links with the academic institutions, leading to greater collaboration and sharing of knowledge. The campus industry parks will increase the employability of students and prepare them for the demands of the industry by providing hands-on practical training.

In essence, the educational institutions’ academic campuses will have campus industry parks to address problems relating to the existence of limited industrial land and its alienation from academia. The initiative will offer practical training to the students, commercialize their research topics and nurture the link between the industrial sector and the respective educational institution. Infrastructure development incentives will be made available by the government for developing the parks.
