Mass Leave Announced by 700 Teachers of 17 Rajasthan Medical College Teachers

Nearly 700 teachers from 17 government medical colleges in Rajasthan announced a mass leave starting July 22. The teachers agitated for fair pay rules and charged the state government with not bringing those appointed before August 1, 2024, under the Rajasthan Service Rules, leading to glaring disparities in pay and conditions of service.Background of the Issue with RajMES Service Rules Teachers in government medical colleges within Rajasthan are appointed by an autonomous institution of the state government, namely the Rajasthan Medical Education Society. Presently, service rules of the society are applied to those teachers. However, the medical teachers have been demanding that the Rajasthan Civil Services Rules be revised in pay, to be adopted by the society, due to several anomalies in the rules presently applied.
It was announced in the state budget by the government that the Rajasthan Civil Services Rules would be implemented in RajMES. The teachers’ association welcomed this move. However, it has now been revealed that these rules would apply to teachers appointed on or after August 1, 2024 only.Concerns Over Pay Disparity The notification of exclusion of medical teachers appointed before August 1, 2024, has opened up a Pandora’s box as the teachers are now upset over the apparent pay disparity that will occur amongst the medical teachers. According to them, existing rules of the society will be applicable to them, while Rajasthan Civil Services will have the Revised Pay Rules for teachers appointed on or after August 1, 2024.
Finally, around 700 teachers from 17 government medical colleges in Rajasthan have announced plans for mass leave from July 22. Basically, the teachers have been demanding equitable and fair pay rules under the Rajasthan Civil Services Rules, like other professional services in the state. The teachers are expecting the state government to take cognizance of their problems through this stir and adopt a single set of rules for all medical teachers.
