The Nagaland State Level Education Committee (SLEC) has agreed upon the implementation of the National Education Policy, 2020, from the year 2025. The state will implement the NEP 2020 in government as well as private schools in the state. This was discussed at the recent SLEC meeting where Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio attended. As the Minister-in-charge of School Education and SCERT, Chief Minister Rio attended the SLEC meeting in which a few important decisions were made related to school education, one of the resolutions that include approving of a few major reforms the state would carry out regarding its education system.
The SLEC embraced the 5+3+3+4 structure that was promoted by the NEP and therefore provided an easy transition towards a holistic national education framework. A new Nagaland Education Service will be established for monitoring standards of education; in this connection, there is a particular committee going to propose how it shall be formed and managed. Moreover, SLEC also introduced regulation for private schools by passing a law that required any new private institution to receive prior approval from the Department of Education and function only under the supervision of a registered society.
The enrollment and quality of education at state schools were also handled by the SLEC with several upgrades and amalgamations. In Kohima, Dimapur, and Mon districts, six government middle schools will be promoted to high schools. In addition, a primary school at Ikishe village will be upgraded to a middle school. The government is also merging 16 GMS with the high school in their areas, whereas 20 other government primary and middle schools will consolidate to higher categories to bring more efficiency.
Due to low enrollment, 17 primary schools with a zero enrollment were closed-including nine in Peren district and several others within Wokha, Zunheboto, Chumoukedima, and other districts-as sanctioned by the SLEC. The teachers from the respective schools would be redeployed to schools that enrolled students more than the said average of zero. Besides that, 54 GMS had been downgraded as a primary school since enrollment had gone below three per class in classes 6-8. Among such are Zunheboto and Peren district.
This shall bring in some economies and administrative simplicity in the system by reducing 13 higher secondary schools to lower secondary school due to less students enrolment in classes 9 and 10. It was proposed that such educational institutes shall be re-reviewed based on future enrolments by those districts like Kiphire, Zunheboto, and Phek district, and the vacant teacher shall be posted into required districts.
To be in accordance with the objectives of NEP, the SLEC intended to form the SSSA and introduce SQAAF for Nagaland. A committee would be constituted to figure out the workforce requirement and recommend appointments under new heads for several education vacancies as well as to overcome deficiencies in schools as well as quality all over the state.
