#ShikshaSaptah Day 2: FLN (Foundational Literacy & Numeracy) Day

Across the country, celebrations under the name of Shiksha Saptah are being carried out, covering a span of one week to celebrate the fourth anniversary of the National Education Policy 2020. Just in the midst of Shiksha Saptah itself, a day has been specifically dedicated to highlight FLN skills. That would bring into focus their very important contribution toward young learners’ cognitive development and an overall educational journey. The feature story throws light on what FLN skills mean and their impact on making an education system in India more equitable, more inclusive, and efficient.

Foundational Literacy and Numeracy skills do form the core of learning. This is because they are quite influential in setting a positive disposition for education in general and ease of passage to later stages of students’ educational journey. Foundational Literacy and Numeracy skills are meant to equip students with reading, writing, communication, and understanding of the use of numbers and mathematical concepts.

The second day of Shiksha Saptah shall be exclusively kept for creating awareness about the importance of FLN skills and highlighting the success stories of NIPUN Bharat, whereby children shall experience integrated and joyful learning through play, story, rhymes, activities, local art, craft and music. Organize a host of activities and events involving all the stakeholders towards this endeavor for developing collaborative approach in strengthening the FLN skills of the young learners.

Foundational Literacy and Numeracy skills are being laid down in children as an adequate base for a more equitable, inclusive, and efficient education system in India during Shiksha Saptah. These skills work not only to progress in academics but also further cognitive development, social integration, and overall well-being. They empower children to be involved learners and interact with the immediate surroundings, thereby building concrete bases for lifelong learning.

FLN skills—taken together—are the very foundation of success for any young learner in his or her school life and beyond. So, it is enthralling to the main themes of FLN in Shiksha Saptah: recognition for that core part of the skills purporting to bring a collaborative, innovative educational environment. FLN skills are therefore very important to be fostered and built as a measure of a strong education system that can give a child an opportunity to make it through life.
