The University Grants Commission (UGC) is organizing the launching of “Handbook on Basics of Cyber Hygiene for Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs)” along with a UGC-CHETNA Lecture Series – “Busting Digital Arrest,” scheduled for November 6, 2024, at 2:00 PM IST. Cybersecurity expert Shri Sanjay Sahay, a former IPS officer and founder-director of TechConPro, will engage in conversation with Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar, Chairman, UGC. The initiative brings forth the commitment of UGC to strengthen digital safety practices within academic institutions and increase awareness on cybersecurity among students and faculty.

This handbook will guide students, educators, and administrators within HEIs on basic cyber hygiene practices to be adopted in their institution. As the digital environment becomes increasingly vulnerable to cyber attacks, the guide will enable the institution to take control of the situation, protecting data and personal information and building a safe online ecosystem. Key areas include safe browsing habits, email security, password management, and guidelines for securing devices used in academic settings.

During the Live session CHETNA lecture series will be conducted under UGC initiative for creating Cyber Security Awareness. Titled “Busting Digital Arrest,” the lecture by Shri Sahay will focus on demystifying cybercrime, shedding light on the legal implications of digital activities, and addressing common misconceptions related to online security. The session is intended to provide actionable insights on recognizing and preventing cyber threats while ensuring students and faculty can safely navigate the digital realm.

Participants of the live session will be able to share their opinions and ask questions, making it an interactive discussion on the challenges and responsibilities that come with digital engagement. Prof. Kumar underlined the importance of cyber awareness saying, “cybersecurity is no longer an option but a necessity” as HEIs increasingly rely on digital tools for education and communication.

This is a landmark achievement for UGC in building the culture of cybersecurity in the educational landscape of India. The evolving nature of cyber threats makes the initiative by UGC underpin resilience and knowledge around digital safety for the academic community of this nation.
