As part of a groundbreaking partnership between All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and University College London (UCL), medical technology is to be transformed. These tripartite agreements, formalized today, aim to advance innovation in diagnostics, imaging, medical devices, assistive technologies, digital health, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing.
The partnership seeks to combine the expertise of these three renowned institutions to tackle global health challenges through cutting-edge solutions. It will focus on joint research initiatives, staff and student exchanges, collaborative degree programs, and workshops designed to push the boundaries of medical science and technology.
UCL President and Provost Michael Spence described the initiative as a powerful example of international cooperation. “At UCL, we realize the transformative power that global partnerships can play in solving some of our most pressing health challenges. This collaboration between AIIMS and IIT Delhi has immense potential to bring real and impactful change in healthcare across the world,” he said.
According to Professor Alok Thakar, Head of the Centre for Medical Innovation and Entrepreneurship at AIIMS, this partnership is a turning point in the development of medical technology. “By unifying expertise in medical science, engineering, and policy, we are building a platform for groundbreaking innovations in healthcare. This partnership has the potential to set new standards in MedTech and patient care,” he said.
Prof Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, stresses on reducing healthcare costs. “We can definitely solve major health issues by employing research and innovation. This tie-up will indeed help in the design of cost-effective medical technologies and make quality health care accessible to everyone,” said he.
The collaboration will also leverage on connections from the industry in all three institutions and allow for interdisciplinary approaches to solving healthcare challenges. After the signing, the leaders visited the med-tech facility, mPRAGATI, a national hub in IIT Delhi for developing medical devices.
This is the first fully comprehensive partnership between AIIMS, IIT Delhi, and UCL, though there have been bilateral relationships between them in the past. The universities look forward to accelerating breakthroughs in medical technology with this collaboration and setting an international benchmark for innovation in healthcare.
