IIT Kanpur has launched the FARE, an initiative that focuses on exceptional PhD students. Official release today informs that FARE is said to induce high levels of academic and research work while encouraging timely completion of their PhD studies with an aim to enhance the quality of high-quality research output.
FARE is for full-time students who have been studying in IIT Kanpur. The student should present his/her thesis within the time span of five years of the PhD program. There is a provision also for the student who submitted their thesis within five years and six months of commencement; however, fellowship period of such students will be altered.
This minimum requirement for being eligible would be having at least one research paper related to PhD research accepted or published as the first author in reputed journal or conference proceedings. The fellowship would cover the Y18 batch onwards, which would seem to place its focus on newer PhD cohorts.
The fellowship funding will be available for up to 12 months. The Institute intends that stipends be paid at the same rate as is used for post-doctoral fellows, and other grants will be made available to support research, in line with other fellows. Of course, the press release further elaborated that the current thesis supervisor will continue to supervise the fellows, but active collaborations with the faculty during the fellowship period will encourage students to be under a wider platform of academic support.
IIT Kanpur’s FARE is a program to reach excellence and, therefore forms a key step toward the environment of academic and research excellence. The programme reinforces the commitment of the institute to advance knowledge and innovation by high calibre doctoral research.
