IIT Madras Launches CyStar to Advance Cybersecurity Research

IIT Madras launches CyStar – India’s First Research Centre for Cybersecurity, Trust and Reliability Center Indian Institute of Technology Madras today launched its “Centre for Cybersecurity, Trust and Reliability” called CyStar to serve the advancement of fundamental and applied research in cybersecurity. The launch of this center marks a major step forward in the leadership of innovation that will address pressing security challenges along the digital landscape of India.

The aim of the CyStar is to expand and enhance the frontiers of cybersecurity research and education. Center focus areas include, but are not limited to innovation in the blockchain and security in AI models, cryptography, quantum security, and IoT. Cybersecurity is inherently multi-disciplinary in nature; thus, CyStar organizes its research team with diverse skills and expertise across disciplines.

CyStar aims to bring academia and industry-in-research to collaborate at national as well as international levels. In doing so, the center shall prepare its students, professionals, and researchers toward robust and efficient tackling of complex security issues arising from a highly interconnected world. The initiatives under the umbrella of CyStar will span diverse sectors in a way designed to tackle some of the most critical security issues at the core of finance, health care, automotive, and electronics industries.

Referring to it as one of the most promising technological ventures, Professor V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, in his address at the launch, emphasized the serious need for proactive cyber defense mechanisms given the rising nature of the threats posed by cyberattacks and said that these threats are beyond financial motivations and include targeted attacks on crucial infrastructure. Initiatives like CyStar play a key role in guaranteeing the safety of the nation.

With ever-evolving digital landscapes, CyStar is going to be right in the heart of cybersecurity resilience in India. It’s going to contribute to safety in the digital world for people and organisations. CyStar will encourage innovative research and education in the company, making today’s and tomorrow’s cybersecurity issues a mandate.
