HirePro, an AI-powered recruitment automation firm, finds that the landscape of internships is transforming in its recent report ‘The New Reality in College Hiring’. The report highlights that students (53%), colleges (40%) and corporates (57%) prefer internships that last for 4 to 6 months (one semester) as it is neither too long nor too short. Students see internships as an opportunity to learn the real-world nuances of what they study in classrooms, while being mentored by a knowledgeable expert. For corporates, it is a great way to closely observe a candidate and see how quickly they can learn and start delivering on tasks.

However, 37% of colleges endorse 10-12 months long internship for students to be industry ready and shorter internships, lasting 2 to 3 months, are popular among 40% of students.

HirePro’s expansive report studied the aspirations and preferences of a diverse pool of 20,000+ students, 350+ educational institutions, and 200+ corporate entities, with additional perspectives from 100+ campus recruitment experts.

According to the report, students prioritise flexibility and fair compensation in internships. Key findings reveal:
– 68% of students are willing to relocate to any location for the right internship opportunity.
– The expected monthly stipend for full-time internships ranges from INR 15,000 to INR 40,000.

Conversely, a significant disparity exists between students, corporates, and academia regarding remote and flexible internship models. As the demand for remote and flexible work continues to rise, the survey highlights that 79% of students are ready to embrace remote internships, while 71% of corporates remain resistant to it, citing concerns over effective supervision and hands-on training. 67% colleges support remote internship models, acknowledging the new digital landscape. Notably, 86% of students expressed interest in part-time internships – a preference that 55% of corporates oppose.

“Internships have increasingly become a preferred mode of candidate selection for many corporates. Similarly, students now prefer engaging with companies well before the final placement cycle, with contests and hackathons serving as an initial touchpoints and internships representing the next step,” said Mr. S Pasupathi, COO, HirePro.
