The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at the residence of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in connection with financial irregularities at the institution, as per media reports. Ghosh is currently under investigation for money laundering under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and is in CBI custody.
On September 6, his petition challenging a Calcutta High Court decision to involve the CBI in the case was listed before the Supreme Court, with Chief Justice DY Chandrachud presiding.
The CBI arrested Ghosh on September 2 following corruption allegations, and he has been in police custody since Tuesday. The case stems from a Calcutta High Court directive, which prompted the CBI to register an FIR against him on August 24. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) in Kolkata has also suspended Ghosh’s membership amid the probe.
In addition to corruption charges, Ghosh underwent polygraph tests as part of the investigation into the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor, whose body was found at the college on August 9. The CBI is expected to submit a progress report on the case by September 17.
