Rekhta Foundation has organized Rekhta Baitbaazi – a national-level competition aimed at preserving and advancing the centuries-old tradition of Urdu poetry. This unique initiative aims to inspire students, nurture a new generation of Urdu poetry enthusiasts, and pass on the Urdu language and culture legacy to future generations.

The journey of Rekhta Baitbaazi has been marked by remarkable participation from students across the nation. Throughout May 2024, virtual shortlisting and qualifying rounds were conducted, leading up for subsequent stages of the competition, which is being held across various universities in the country. The grand finale is set to take place during the world’s largest Urdu language, literature, and cultural festival, Jashn-e-Rekhta, in New Delhi from December 13, 14 & 15, 2024.

Baitbaazi is popular among Urdu poetry lovers not just in India and Pakistan, but across the globe. Similar to Antakshari, the game involves participants showcasing their knowledge of Urdu poetry by responding with fresh couplets (sher) beginning with the last letter of the couplets recited by the opponent. However, the challenge extends beyond mere memory, demanding a deep understanding of Urdu poetry, where participants are judged on the wit of their responses and the elegance of their recitation. The first round of this series i.e. the famous educational institute of Bhiwandi Rais College will be played on September 19 from 2 pm on the teams of Maharashtra province.

The competition has seen overwhelming participation, bringing together over 10,000 students from diverse backgrounds and institutions nationwide. Over 300 participants from 100+ active teams from more than 40 institutions, including prominent universities like IIT Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia, Aligarh Muslim University, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Banaras Hindu University, and the University of Kashmir, have joined this celebration of Urdu traditions.

“Games like Baitbaazi are not just a form of recreation but also a celebration of our rich oral traditions,” said Huma Khalil, Trustee & Creative Director, Rekhta Foundation. “They offer us a unique lens to explore the myriad possibilities embedded within Urdu couplets by the masters of Urdu poetry. Our goal is to elevate Baitbaazi to an international stage, where it can serve as a powerful vehicle for promoting Urdu poetry and related art forms.”

All participating teams will receive official certificates recognizing their contribution to preserving the Urdu tradition. The winning team will be awarded a trophy and a substantial cash prize, with additional rewards for the runner-up teams.

Rekhta Foundation invites poetry lovers and enthusiasts from all corners of the country to join in this cultural celebration and witness the brilliance of the next generation of Urdu poets at the grand finale during Jashn-e-Rekhta 2024.
