It is a shared responsibility to realize an education that is deeply rooted in cultural heritage, forward-looking, multilingual, and geared towards meeting the requirements and challenges of the 21st century. This means a common endeavor from all stakeholders involved in seeing to it that the student receives a comprehensive and inclusive education that sets him up for life. It is beckoning to all concerned about the ways of integrating traditional knowledge with modern skills, the attainment of a multilingual environment, and providing students with tools necessary to adapt to an increasingly complex and interdependent world. If working together, the proposed education system shall inculcate the preservation of cultural identity but at the same time embrace innovation and progress to benefit both students and the society as a whole.

The State of Odisha is all prepared to witness a sea change in its myriad school sector once around 800 schools are proposed to be developed as PM SHRI Schools. The effort, also aligned with NEP-2020, would be helpful for the identified schools to emerge as model schools, and they will introduce fundamental attributes of NEP-2020. An MoU on this initiative was finally signed recently between the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, Government of India, and the State of Odisha in New Delhi. The signing ceremony was attended by Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Singh Chaudhury and the Education Secretary of Odisha.

The PM SHRI schools will eminently reflect the NEP-2020 recommended curriculum and act as model demonstrations for other schools in the state. The initiative honed to improve infrastructure and the quality of existing schools under various authorities: Central and State Government, Local bodies, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, and Navodaya School Society. The initiative looks at the infrastructure development of schools. Innovation areas under this initiative are IT, Smart Classrooms, Digital Library, Digital Learning Tools, and Sports Facilities. He said Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also stressed the need to implement NEP in its entirety and to use technology so that learning outcomes become visible, adding that it means a rooted, futuristic, multilingual, 21st-century education. He mentioned that thereby, the state and the Centre had a collective responsibility towards strengthening the ecosystem of education and replicating best practices from across all states and union territories.
The PM SHRI Schools will benefit more than 1.8 million students and focus on making holistic and well-rounded individuals equipped with essential 21st-century skills. These schools will focus on integrating Indian Knowledge Systems with cutting-edge skills of the 21st century, thus making them beacons of exemplary institutions equipped with upgraded infrastructure, innovative pedagogy, and technology.

The Odisha government’s association with the Ministry of Education evidently is a collective initiative towards strengthening school education and all-round development for the students studying across the state. This will be underpinned by a shared commitment to enhancing the quality of education, aligning it with the vision enshrined in NEP-2020.
In a nutshell, the setting up of the PM SHRI Schools in Odisha assumes prime importance in the execution of the goals enshrined in the National Education Policy of 2020. The prime resolution taken here was to provide a modern, inclusive, and top-quality education system that ensures students grow in every aspect if they are to thrive on earth in the turbulent 21st century.
