The Uttar Pradesh government is taking a major step to give youth global opportunities by launching the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee-Chevening Uttar Pradesh State Government Scholarship Scheme. Under this plan, five outstanding students from the state will get the chance each year to pursue higher education in the United Kingdom. The scheme will start in the academic year 2025 to 2026 and will run for three years. Its goal is to improve the state’s talent pool by helping students gain international experience.
The announcement came after the state cabinet approved the scholarship package, which is a partnership between the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the UK. The program aims to cover the significant costs that often prevent deserving students from studying abroad. According to the official announcement, each selected student will receive financial support that includes tuition fees, examination and research costs, a monthly living allowance, and round-trip economy airfare. This allows the students to focus entirely on their studies and research without worrying about financial issues.
In terms of funding, the Uttar Pradesh government will give about ₹23 lakh per student. The FCDO will cover the other expenses and is already known for running the prestigious Chevening Scholarships, which is one of the UK’s most respected international scholarship programs. This partnership shows a shared commitment between India and the United Kingdom to invest in future leaders and strengthen academic and cultural connections.
The scheme will be in effect during the academic years 2025 to 2026, 2026 to 2027, and 2027 to 2028. Any extension beyond this three-year period will need new approval from the state government before March 30, 2028. During these years, fifteen exceptional students from Uttar Pradesh will benefit from this opportunity. Officials stressed that the selection process will be fair and transparent, following the guidelines set out in the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the state and the FCDO. This guarantees that only the most deserving students, chosen based on their academic excellence and leadership potential, will receive the scholarship.
Uttar Pradesh’s Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyay commented on the initiative, saying the scholarship honors former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, one of the most respected leaders from the state. “Naming the scholarship after Atalji is a way of honoring his significant contributions to Indian politics and society while inspiring youth to follow his path of leadership and service,” he said. He also emphasized that the partnership with the FCDO would not only provide financial support but also global recognition for the selected scholars from the state.
The scholarship targets students who want to pursue a one-year master’s degree at well-known universities in the United Kingdom. This opportunity is expected to give them valuable knowledge, access to international academic networks, and exposure to global research methods, which will be important when they return to help India grow. The scheme shows the state government’s increasing focus on higher education and its intent to nurture professionals who can bring innovative ideas and international practices back to Uttar Pradesh.
Officials have pointed out that this program will open doors for young scholars who might not otherwise have the means to afford such an expensive opportunity abroad. While Indian students have always had a strong interest in studying in the UK, costs for tuition, living expenses, and travel often discourage many deserving candidates. By addressing this financial gap, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-Chevening Scholarship will make global education more accessible for students from Uttar Pradesh.
The program also supports the goal of strengthening the relationship between India and the UK in education. Over the years, Chevening Scholarships have produced leaders and change-makers worldwide, and this partnership specifically for Uttar Pradesh will add to that legacy. The initiative is expected to not only improve the students’ academic credentials but also create a platform for building international connections and fostering cultural understanding.
The state government believes this important initiative will inspire students across districts to aim higher and prepare for global opportunities. For many, this will be a life-changing experience, both in their studies and personal lives, allowing them to expand their perspectives and return with skills that can help Uttar Pradesh develop.
As the scheme prepares for its first group of scholars in 2025, there is already excitement among students and educators. For deserving candidates with dreams of studying abroad but limited resources, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-Chevening Uttar Pradesh State Government Scholarship represents both recognition and opportunity. It signals a future where talent is nurtured beyond borders and where pursuing knowledge becomes a joint focus for local and global partners.
