As part of its effort to bridge the education gap for children of migrant laborers, a non-profit called Educate Girls in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Department launched the ‘Vidya Kumbh’ initiative. The special make-shift primary school at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj would ensure uninterrupted access to education for children who accompany their families to one of the largest religious and cultural gatherings in the world.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, held once every 12 years, draws millions of devotees, pilgrims, and tourists from across India and beyond. This grand event not only holds spiritual significance but also generates extensive economic activity, with over 90,000 workers involved in its planning and execution. Among these workers are migrant laborers who travel long distances with their families, often disrupting their children’s education in the process. The Vidya Kumbh initiative addresses this challenge by offering an inclusive learning environment that ensures educational continuity during the months-long event.

Spanning a duration of four months, Vidya Kumbh provides children access to foundational learning, quality educational materials, and activities designed to build essential life skills. The school operates out of Sanitation Colony-2 and was inaugurated in December 2024. During the opening ceremony, attended by Anand Singh, Additional Chief Medical Officer, Rajeev Tripathi, Deputy Commissioner of the Basic Education Department, and representatives from Educate Girls, a special learning curriculum kit called ‘Gyan Ka Pitara’ was introduced. This supplementary kit focuses on foundational literacy and numeracy for children in grades 3 to 5, aligning with the initiative’s goal to improve educational outcomes.

Akanksha Rana, Special Officer of the Maha Kumbh Mela Authority, lauded the initiative at the inauguration, stating, “Vidya Kumbh is a commendable initiative that will inspire children from laborer families towards education and secure their future. This effort to prioritize education amidst a grand event like the Maha Kumbh Mela will bring a significant change in the lives of these children.”

The Vidya Kumbh impact is already visible, especially in the outreach to girl children who were earlier identified as out-of-school in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan states. These children were actually found at the camps, reiterating the need for initiatives like Vidya Kumbh that can reach out to transient populations and connect them to a consistent educational opportunity. Vikram Solanki, Director of Operations at Educate Girls, highlighted the transformative nature of the initiative, stating, “This transformative step towards ensuring no child’s education is disrupted due to socio-economic circumstances underscores the importance of taking education to where children are, rather than waiting for them to come to us.”

The program is also considered a step forward in fulfilling the educational requirements of migrant communities who, due to their nomadic lifestyle, are not able to access quality education for their children. Praveen Kumar Tiwari, Basic Education Officer of Prayagraj, was also optimistic about the program, stating, “Through this camp, we are striving to promote education and connect children to foundational learning for a better future.”. I am confident that this initiative will be a success at the Kumbh Mela. My gratitude goes to all the organizations contributing to this effort.”

The Vidya Kumbh initiative serves as a reminder of the power of education in transforming lives, particularly for children from marginalized communities. By ensuring that these children remain connected to learning despite their socio-economic challenges, the program not only safeguards their future but also emphasizes the importance of inclusive and accessible education in achieving broader developmental goals.
