A high level stakeholders meeting was held at GGSIPU to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Dental Education. As per the WHO Global Oral Health Status Report, oral diseases affect 3.5 billion individuals globally. To tackle this case load, the academic experts feel AI can play a vital role. The technology enhances diagnostic accuracy, treatment planning, and patient care in dentistry.
The project is a collaborative approach of Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Science (MAIDS) and Guru Govind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), and is being funded by UKIERI and SPARC. It aims at developing a training module for dental students and its implication. The lead investigators from QMUL, London were Dr Manu Raj Mathur and Dr Anil Golkari; from GGSIPU Prof Dr Mahesh Verma; and from MAIDS Prof. Dr Vikrant Mohanty.
Padma Shri Prof (Dr) Mahesh Verma, Vice Chancellor of GGSIPU in his welcome address said that this was the only competitive award in Healthcare research that is awarded through the consortium of leading academic institutions from the UK and India. The initiative will be a path breaking project, which will pave the way for the integration of AI following appropriate ethical standards in Dental Education.
Dr Vartika Kathuria Monga, Project Coordinator shared the overview of the project. Prof Vikrant Mohanty deliberated upon the “Current landscape and scope of AI in Indian Dental Education”. He informed that around 317 Dental colleges are functional with 28,000 graduates, 8,000 PG seats, 15,000 faculties and 3.7 lakh dentists rendering their services across India.
Dr Ali Golkari spoke on the “Recent advances in AI: An overview of QMUL projects”. He stressed on the need for haptics in dental education. Prof Dr Manu Raj Mathur narrated about the way forward and project milestones. He mentioned about the genesis of the project as to how out of the 57 applicants, only one on health, and that too on oral health was awarded. The deliberations aim at developing an outline of the project with a timeline. The IT experts of GGSIPU were also present on the occasion.
