In an effort to redesign the scenario of higher education, Government of Kerala is going to set up seven Centres of Excellence. This has been part of the campaign “Study in Kerala” for branding the state as a destination of excellence for international students and fostering innovative research.
At a recent conference, Higher Education Minister R. Bindu pointed out that this massive revamping is taking place based on the recommendations of the Higher Education Reformation Commission. The Centres of Excellence would be attached to diverse fields such as social science, language and culture, science and technology—all of which would work towards producing advanced research works of international recognition .
Vision for Excellence in Education
Quality enhancement in the higher education sector should result in making Kerala a centre of knowledge and innovation,” Minister Bindu said. Administrative sanction has already been given to the first phase .Each Centre will be an institution unto itself and the order empowers it to function with state-of-the-art infrastructure and faculty and researchers of proven merit to enable students to have world-class education.
Upcoming Conclave in Higher Education
At the state level, these educational reforms are to be followed by a higher education conclave later this year. It is slated to take place in November or December and is aimed at bringing together various higher education institutions under one roof in order to reaffirm the commitment of Kerala towards education of high standards and collaborative in nature.
Holistic Approach to Woo Global Scholars
The “Study in Kerala” initiative is not limited to traditional degree programs; rather, it includes quite a few very innovative non-degree courses that would explore the rich artistic traditions, native wisdom, tourism, and gastronomy of this state. These are tailor-made courses for international students, with the aim of showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Kerala and thus proving to be an attractive destination for learning and discovery.
As Kerala embarks on this ambitious journey, the Centres of Excellence may be considered quintessential in view of attaining excellence in the quality of higher education and research for the ultimate creation of a vibrant, heterogeneous academic community reverberating across global borders.
