Share

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has launched a pioneering internship programme aimed at Library Science graduates and postgraduates. This initiative, designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice, seeks to equip students with hands-on skills while enhancing the university’s library operations.

The programme is a tribute to the legacy of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, the founder of modern library science in India, that has been launched under the Institution of Eminence initiative by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. One of the pioneers in the field of shaping library and information science, Dr. Ranganathan’s work continues to inspire in the field, and this internship programme is designed to carry forward his vision of improving library systems across the country. A Focus on Skill Development

The Dr. S. R. Ranganathan Library Internship Programme will provide interns the chance to work directly under BHU’s library system. In this way, valuable experience in managing library operations would be provided while providing new ideas and insights.
The programme shall take into the fold 20 interns initially for a one-year term. Each intern would get ₹20,000 monthly. On performance, interns will be offered a possibility of internship extension for a further year. Those completing at least six months of the programme will be given a Certificate of Internship. The program focuses on developing critical skills in library science, including but not limited to cataloging, digital archiving, user services, and collection management. By exposing interns to the operational framework of a prestigious institution like BHU, it provides a unique platform for aspiring library professionals to hone their skills. Empowering Library Science Graduates Nationwide

While BHU’s own library system has long been a training ground for LIS graduates, this new initiative will expand the scope of the programme to graduates and postgraduates from the top 100 universities in India as ranked by NIRF or those deemed as Institutions of National Importance.

This national outreach would create a diverse and dynamic pool of interns to make sure there is a larger range of innovative ideas and perspectives.
The program will be managed by BHU’s Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy Cell, which has handled several impactful academic and research-oriented initiatives. The SRICC would ensure that the program is conducted smoothly with the highest standards in training, mentoring, and skill development. Saluting the Legacy of Dr. Ranganathan In a statement, BHU highlighted the importance of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan’s contributions to the field, noting that he was closely associated with the university throughout his career. Dr. Ranganathan’s work laid the foundation for modern library science in India, and his theories on library classification and organization are still widely used today. His vision of libraries as instruments of knowledge dissemination and access continues to inspire generations of library professionals.

The internship program not only pays homage to the legacy of Dr. Ranganathan but also offers an opportunity to prepare the next generation of library professionals for the challenges and opportunities of modern library systems. Enhancing Library Operations at BHU
The university argues that the Library Internship programme has already begun bringing considerable changes in its library system. This is through involving the interns in the running of the daily operations of the library that has seen improvement in its services, increased efficiency, and incorporation of new technologies in the framework of the library.

As the programme expands, it is anticipated that it will not only provide essential learning experiences to LIS graduates but also enhance the operations of libraries at BHU, thereby strengthening its position as a leading educational institution in India.
