In this interview, Deepak Gupta, Co-Founder of Style Lounge, talks about moving from a career in technology to entrepreneurship, the challenges of building trust in a fragmented industry, how AI is changing the customer experience, and his vision for the future of beauty services in India.

After spending so many years in tech, what inspired you to enter the beauty and salon industry?
Technology has transformed almost every industry, but beauty was still highly fragmented. People were spending more on grooming, yet decisions were based on guesswork. I saw an opportunity to bring AI, data, and trust into an industry that touches millions every month. That’s how Style Lounge was born.

What was the biggest challenge when starting Style Lounge from scratch?
Building trust on both sides. Customers had to believe they could discover better salons through technology, while salon owners had to believe technology would increase their business rather than complicate it. Solving that trust gap took time.

How does AI actually help customers choose the right salon services?
Most people don’t know what their skin or hair actually needs. Our AI analyzes skin, scalp, and even beauty products, then recommends suitable treatments instead of relying on trial and error. We want beauty decisions to be data-driven, not just opinion-driven.

What problem in the salon industry were you most determined to solve?
The lack of transparency. Customers don’t know which salon is genuinely good, which products are safe, or what treatment suits them. On the other hand, great salons struggle to market themselves digitally. We are solving both problems together.

Was there a moment when you felt Style Lounge was finally becoming successful?
The turning point wasn’t downloads. It was when customers started coming back without any marketing push and salons began recommending Style Lounge to other salon owners. That’s when I knew we were creating real value.

How do salon owners react when you introduce AI and technology into their business?
Initially, many think AI is complicated. But when they see it helping generate leads, retain customers, automate reminders, and improve customer experience, they quickly realize technology is not replacing them—it’s helping them grow.

What makes Style Lounge different from other salon booking platforms?
We’re not just a booking app. We’re building India’s BeautyTech platform. Discovery, AI skin and scalp analysis, product label scanning, personalized recommendations, makeup artist aggregation, customer engagement, and salon growth tools—all integrated into one ecosystem.

What have you personally learned from interacting with salon owners and customers?
I’ve learned that beauty is deeply personal. People don’t just want a haircut or facial – they want confidence. And salon owners aren’t looking for complicated software; they want simple technology that genuinely helps them grow their business.

What advice would you give to professionals who want to leave a corporate job and start something of their own?
Don’t leave because you’re tired of your job. Leave because you’re obsessed with solving a real problem. Entrepreneurship is far more difficult than a corporate career, but if you’re solving something meaningful, the journey becomes worthwhile.
