IITB-Monash Academy Graduates 39 PhD Researchers

Mumbai: Thirty-nine PhD researchers have graduated from the IITB-Monash Research Academy, marking another milestone for the joint doctoral programme between IIT Bombay and Monash University.
The researchers worked across engineering, science, arts and design, with their doctoral studies covering areas including clean energy technology, public health diagnostics, artificial intelligence and structural materials. Their research focused on challenges with potential applications across India and the wider Indo-Pacific region.
The IITB-Monash Research Academy currently has 185 active doctoral candidates and is described as India’s oldest and largest joint PhD programme.
The Academy has also partnered with IIT Bombay’s Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE) to help move research discoveries from laboratories into startups and industry. The collaboration is aimed at supporting the commercialisation and wider application of research emerging from the doctoral programme.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Monash University Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) and Senior Vice-President Professor Craig Jeffrey said India was central to the university’s regional engagement.
IIT Bombay Director Professor Shireesh Kedare said the partnership was helping create international research pathways and supporting the translation of advanced research into real-world applications.
The graduation ceremony was attended by Monash University Deputy Chancellor Geraldine Putra-Johns and Professor Yiannis Ventikos, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.
The IITB-Monash partnership is part of Monash University’s wider engagement with India. The university had more than 4,300 Indian students in 2025 and has a 2,600-member alumni network in India.
Between 2020 and 2026, Monash researchers contributed to more than 2,600 joint publications with researchers from 470 Indian institutions. The university is also involved in initiatives such as the Australia-India Critical Minerals Research Hub and industry research partnerships with companies including Tata Steel and BharatGen.
