BHU Library: Call for Digitization to Expand Knowledge Access
Share
Central Library, Banaras Hindu University is a temple of knowledge for most. This institution provides shelter to the students, scholars, and knowledge-seekers alone. Rare manuscripts, literary masterpieces, journals, and reference books are kept within this learning symbol of intellectual heritage. A visit to the library recently, accompanied by an insightful interaction with the students, brought out even greater appreciation for the depth of the wisdom of this institution.
This experience inspired a proposal to digitize the library so that these invaluable resources become accessible to a much broader audience, especially those driven by curiosity but limited by geographical or physical constraints. Digitization, as proposed, would allow BHU’s treasures to transcend the campus confines and extend access for researchers, students, and enthusiasts around the world. This process aligns with the growing movement toward digital libraries, preserving and protecting rare collections while democratizing access to knowledge.
“The Central Library of BHU is not just a collection of books; it’s a cultural and intellectual asset for the nation,” said a visitor after the tour. “Digitizing these resources will ensure that this wealth of knowledge reaches future generations, sparking learning and discovery across the world.”
The authorities are showing keen interest in digitization. They see great promise in the digitization initiative for elevating the BHU library to a level accessible worldwide. They believe it may result in more interactions with global academic institutions, allowing students to pursue their researches as never done before.
It would be an excellent example that other Indian libraries would want to emulate. This could further help preserve and share literary and academic resources as well as open India’s academic heritage to the world.
