Decline in Unemployment Rate Among Tribal Communities

Share

The unemployment rate has significantly come down in the recent past for tribal communities in India. According to the latest data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey, while the unemployment rate of tribal communities came down to 1.8 percent in 2022-23, it was 3.4 percent in 2019-20, 2.7 percent in 2020-21, and 2.4 percent in 2021-22.

This positive trend is indicative of the fact that the present government remains committed to improving employment opportunities and the employability of tribal persons.

Government Employment Generation Programmes

The Government of India has placed a lot of emphasis on the generation of employment among the weaker sections of society. The Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, and other Ministries are implementing a number of schemes aimed at generating adequate employment among these groups. These are the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, to name a few. All these schemes are aimed at fast-tracking the process of generating employment in the country and at the state level, like in Rajasthan.

Skill Development Efforts

Other than the generation of employment, the government is also keen on the development of skills to improve the employability of individuals in tribal communities. Skill-based schemes like PMKVY and NAPS are oriented toward equipping persons with the proper competencies so that they may be successful in the job market. All these are critical to make sure that the benefits of the employment generation exercise filter down to the intended persons.

It is because of the current government initiatives to render more employment and develop skills, reflected in the declining rate of unemployment among the tribal populace. These programs hold an immense potential for the progress and betterment of livelihoods for tribal populations all over India as they grow and evolve.
