Recently, Delhi University took some major decisions in its 1018th Academic Council meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh. One of the key decisions taken includes introducing a Russian language programme at the undergraduate level and approving dual degree programmes.

Russian Language Introduced at UG Level For the first time, Delhi University will introduce a Russian language programme at the undergraduate level from the academic session 2024-2025. It would be offered under Slavonic and Finno-Ugrian Studies Department of the Faculty of Arts. So far, courses in the Russian language were offered only at the postgraduate level .Provision for Dual Degrees. The Delhi University has also accepted a provision that will allow the students to pursue two degrees simultaneously. According to the provision, the students can undertake one degree in regular mode available in university colleges/departments and simultaneously pursue another degree in ODL mode available in the School of Open Learning or Campus of Open Learning. The said provision shall first be implemented within the university system before it is extended to a larger level based on experience earned.

These decisions are to allow students more opportunities for their academic and professional growth and round out the offerings of the University in languages and educational flexibility.Other Decisions and Recommendations. The following are some of the other decisions and recommendations in the 1018th Academic Council meeting:Faculty appointments in 12 Delhi government-funded colleges will be advertised by July 31, 2024.The changes in the fourth-semester curriculum for the MSc Forensic Science course students were approved in principle with Anthropology Department recommendations: visits to scenes of crime, project reports, and training in forensic science laboratories.

It was deliberated and approved that the degrees of central Sanskrit universities, such as Shastri, Honoured Shastri, Acharya, Shiksha Shastri, Shiksha Acharya, Vidya Varidhi, and Vachaspati shall be equivalent to their corresponding DU degrees for the purpose of admission to research programmes and employment. The aforesaid decisions and recommendations at best reflect the keen commitment of the university to further steps towards making available to the students qualitatively good education and towards the embellishment of its academic programmes.

Conclusion: The latest decisions to introduce a Russian language programme at the undergraduate level and to approve double degree programmes only prove one thing: that Delhi University keeps increasing the richness of educational opportunities available to students. These initiatives are to increase the field of options available with the students in their academic preferences and flexibility in educational pursuits.
