The Delhi University rolled back its decision of hiking fees for corrections in marksheet and degree certificates. The increased fee, recently approved by Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, increased it from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 for corrections within six years of graduation, and from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 for corrections beyond six years. This decision to roll back the fee hike was taken after stiff opposition by the Academic Council comprising DU teachers. In the Thursday meeting, the teachers opposed the hike in fee following which the administration amended the approved proposal.

New Proposals approved apart from rolling back the hike in fees, several new proposals have been approved by the Delhi University Academic Council. One of them is that LLB students at the Faculty of Law will now have courses on three new criminal laws that came into effect on July 1. For the first time, a course in the Russian language has been introduced at the undergraduate level in DU. Earlier it used to be taught only at the postgraduate level.

Approving the establishment of Dr BR Ambedkar Chair at the university, pending the approval from the UGC was also done by the Council. The Council also approved the six elective papers for students in the center for Hindu studies, like, ‘Introduction to Vedic Literature, Upanishad Parichaya, Dharma and Religion, Hindu Thinkers, Bhagavad Gita for Humanity, and Purana Parichaya’.

Other forward-looking steps Approved. The council has also approved, in the meeting, recommendations from the Department of Anthropology for permitting visits to the scenes of crimes through the police station for students of MSc Forensic Science. A proposal permitting students to pursue dual degrees or two degrees simultaneously, with one in regular mode and the other through open and distance learning, was also passed. It is noteworthy that another proposal teaching Manusmriti to LLB students was turned down by the VC after it drew flak from a section of teachers and students; the call for the rejection was made by a pre-screening committee that found the proposal inappropriate.

Briefly, Delhi University has rolled back its decision of increasing fees for correction in degree and marksheet corrections after opposition from the Academic Council. The council also passed various new proposals, including course introduction, chair’s establishment, and elective paper approval.
