On World Environment Day, Dr. Aman Mittal, Vice Chancellor of Lovely Professional University (LPU) talked in detail about how universities can contribute to sustainability initiatives, setting a precedent for its students. With a commitment to integrating sustainable practices in the campus, LPU continuously contributes in environmental sustainability and community engagement.

What are some Sustainable initiatives on LPU campus?
LPU has embraced a holistic approach to sustainability. The universities can practice environmentally efficient approaches like energy-efficient buildings, solar systems, water conservation measures, and waste reduction strategies, these will help in achieving various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Dr. Mittal states, “Like LPU, it adopted the 20+ villages. In these villages, students and facilities do the different activities under the community projects to make people aware. Use the water harvesting system, the renewable energy system, and other practices.”

What are some Student-led Initiatives in LPU?
In order to empower students, LPU encourages the creation of clubs and projects focused on sustainability. Dr. Mittal pointed out, “LPU students adopted the different villages, planting around 2500 trees every year in the nearby areas and raising awareness among the local people.” Through these practices students can actively contribute to environmental conservation efforts, such as afforestation and waste reduction. This will also instill responsibility in students while developing a knack for environment protection.

What are some Innovative Solutions on campus?
LPU has installed renewable energy sources like solar panels and implemented smart lighting systems across campus. These initiatives can minimize environmental impact and provide valuable experience for students.

What is the Eco-Friendly Infrastructure and Transportation available at LPU?
LPU provides electric vehicles, shuttle services, and promotes carpooling and cycling among its community. Dr. Mittal further adds. “LPU already started the project with the name JoyJoy of Giving, where we teach how to avoid wasting our clothing, we can share our happiness with others by sharing our things. This teaches them how to live with little things without wasting resources. Through this initiative, 8 to 10 times a year, the university’s community service cell collects extra materials from hostels, staff, and students and distributes them to the 800 to 1000 underprivileged people in the area. people in the area.”

How is Integration of Sustainability into Curriculum helpful?
LPU integrates sustainability into its curriculum across disciplines, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. As per Dr. Mittal, “Each course in the university’s UG and PG programmes is created to address a different problem related to sustainable structures, clean water, and energy. Many courses include projects and design challenges as part of ongoing evaluations, which motivates students to come up with ingenious solutions and build sustainable infrastructure.”

Using metrics such as energy and water consumption, carbon emissions, and alignment with Sustainable Development Goals, universities should track their progress towards sustainability. Dr. Mittal said, “According to the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, LPU is in the 101–200 band worldwide. For Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), LPU is overall ranked 41 in the world for Zero Hunger, 77th for Affordable and Clean Energy, and 97th for Decent Work and Economic Growth.’

Sustainable development may seem challenging in the aspect of initial cost and adaptation, however the long term benefits of the institution and environment are impeccable.
