Perhaps the most prominent recent panel discussion was organized by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Rohtak on the topic: ‘Buddhism and Sustainability: Examining India’s Role’. It was moderated by the illustrious Professor Dheeraj Sharma. This formed a part of the larger initiative on stressing the integral relationship between Buddhist principles and sustainable development practices. He drew attention to the dire need to adopt sustainable practices and highlighted how Buddhist values inculcate sustainable development. This was the topic of a panel discussion held in conjunction with the 20th AGBA World Conference in collaboration with IIM-Rohtak, moderated by Professor Sharma. The conference venue was Bangkok, Thailand, from July 8 to 10, 2024, and the theme was anchored to sustainability in the business world. According to a Press Release by IIM Rohtak, the conference emphasized the farsighted need for sustainability not only for long-term economic viability and social responsibility but also to ensure minimum environmental impact. The conference had delegates from 32 countries and nearly 500 research papers, which was a display of global commitment to these critical issues.
At the end of this accesses programme, academics and experts have concluded that Indian thought leadership, particularly vis-à-vis propagating the Buddhist way of life in furthering sustainability, was an important element. With the increasing frequency of global disasters due to climatic change and environmental degradation, the transition to sustainable practices has become Pros. The press release from the IIM Rohtak brought out the dire need for business schools and universities to incorporate sustainable thoughts and practices in their curriculum and day-to-day life of the students.
The panelists uniformly underscored the need for a legitimization of the Buddhist approach towards the creation of a harmonious and sustainable world. This, they urged, among other things, should align issues such as the right to repair and the entrenchment of nonviolence within the values propagated by Buddhism with sustainability, ensuring respect for all living beings within the ecosystem. Professor Sharma closed the discussion, reiterating these values and calling for their embedding within sustainable development strategies.
Indeed, it was an event that brought a large number of speakers, very renowned, from all parts of the world. Among these was Kyle S. Wells, Professor at Utah Tech University, USA, who showed his willingness towards the conference and its aims. He appreciated the strong involvement of delegates hailing from different countries and a considerable number of research contributions. Other notable presenters included Dana-Nicoleta Lascu, a Professor of the University of Richmond in the USA; Viput Ongaskul, Former Dean of the National Institute of Development Administration in Thailand; Gary L. Frankwick from the University of Texas in the USA, and Abdul Razak Bin Ibrahim of the University of Melaka, Malaysia.
Finally, the conference concluded with an award ceremony that recognized invaluable contributions made by academicians and scholars engaged in a wide array of diversified research backgrounds. As per the issued press release, a few faculties and doctoral scholars of IIM Rohtak have been recognized and awarded for their scholarly contributions that further entrenched the institution’s commitment toward advancing sustainability and thought leadership in the global academic community.
Such a holistic event focused on sustainability and infused with Buddhism could therefore be one huge step to really make some corrections among the most compelling environmental and social challenges which we are presented with today. This means that indeed, discussions and resolutions from the conference are bound to influence future policies and educational practices toward a more sustainable and harmonious world.
