Laxity In Compliance With Tobacco Control Laws In Higher Education Institutes In Delhi

Laxity has observed the compliance of tobacco control laws in higher education institutes in Delhi. The finding has come out of a survey conducted by the

Department of Public Health Dentistry, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences. The survey was conducted on 60 Delhi- based institutes of higher learning.

These institutes were grilled under the three prime provisions of tobacco control laws ‘COPTA 2003’ – prohibition of smoking in public places, banning advertisement of tobacco products and sale of tobacco products to minors. Overall compliance was 45.8 percent, informed Prof. Vikrant Mohanti of the survey team.

This report is an attempt to identify the gaps and challenges before the higher educational institutes in order to build effective policies and programmes so as to make our next generation tobacco free, said Prof. Mohanti.

This survey report was released at the awareness camp organised by the NSS Cell of IP University at Dwarka campus here today on oral health & tobacco related issues.

The Vice Chancellor of the IP University Padmashri Prof. Doctor Mahesh Verma said on the occasion that the mouth is the mirror of our body. A number of ailments can be diagnosed through the screening of the mouth. We can easily prevent mouth- related diseases by awareness.

Prof. Varun Joshi, Convener of NSS Cell of IP University said on the occasion that we can ward off life style related diseases by simply change our lifestyle.

A dental check up camp was also organised on the occasion in which students, staff, sanitary workers and security guards of the University were benefitted.
