Share

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Conlis Global, a Canada-based biotechnology company, for the licensing of an innovative technology aimed at promoting bone healing and regeneration, as per media reports.

The memorandum was signed by Prof. Tarun Gupta, Dean of Resources and Development at IIT Kanpur, and Dr. Sumrita Bhat, CEO of Conlis Global Inc., at IIT Kanpur. Notable figures present at the signing ceremony included Prof. S. Ganesh, Director of IIT Kanpur, Prof. Ankush Sharma, Professor In-charge of the Start-up Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC) at IIT Kanpur, Prof. Ashok Kumar from the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering at IIT Kanpur, and Dr. Raman Koul, Chief Technology Officer of Conlis Global Inc.

The technology in question, titled ‘Nano Hydroxyapatite-Based Porous Polymer Composite Scaffolds for Bioactive Molecule Delivery in Musculoskeletal Regeneration,’ was developed by Prof. Ashok Kumar and his team at IIT Kanpur’s Department of Biological Sciences & Bioengineering. As per an official statement from IIT Kanpur, this groundbreaking technology promotes bone regeneration by effectively delivering bone-active biomolecules to the implant site in a biocompatible manner.

Prof. Ashok Kumar emphasized that this material presents a promising approach to reconstructing and repairing bone defects, effectively addressing the limitations associated with existing market technologies.

IIT Kanpur’s Director, Prof. Ganesh, hailed the licensing of this novel technology to Conlis Global as a significant milestone in the institution’s research and development efforts. He stressed the potential global impact of this innovative solution in addressing bone-related disorders.

Dr. Sumrita Bhat, CEO of Conlis Global, expressed excitement about partnering with IIT Kanpur to introduce this groundbreaking technology to the market. She highlighted the technology’s potential to advance the treatment of bone and joint disorders.

Prof. Tarun Gupta described the signing of the MOU with Conlis Global as a pivotal moment in IIT Kanpur’s journey to bridge the gap between research and commercialization, bringing lab-developed products to market fruition.

Key features of the new technology include its biodegradable Nano Hydroxyapatite-based Porous Composite Scaffolds, which possess osteoinductive and osteopromotive properties crucial for bone regeneration. Additionally, the technology demonstrates high biocompatibility, ensuring effective interaction with osteoblast cells and exhibiting impressive mechanical strength.
