IIT Madras’ AI, Data Analytics BTech Becomes Top Choice in 2024

Share

Since the introduction of BTech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics last June 2024, much attention has been drawn to the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. As seen in the Joint Implementation Committee report, the innovative course quickly rose to the rank of a newcomer, becoming IIT Madras’s third most popular choice among those applying for it in the initial year.

The BTech in AI and Data Analytics is at the merger of core fundamentals with emerging technologies. With foundational learning in mathematics, data science, AI, and machine learning, this emphasizes practical skills in application development and responsible technology design, making it one of the top choices at the institute for 20,323 interested students this year.

The program is second only to the well-established Computer Science and Engineering, with 23,741 interested students, and Electrical Engineering, with 20,350 interested students. This number clearly shows that the specialized education in data-driven technologies is increasingly needed and that AI features are coming to be a part of many domains.

Other flagship programs of IIT Madras included Mechanical Engineering by 17,922, Aerospace Engineering by 14,165, and Civil Engineering with 13,901. The list comprises Chemical Engineering and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, both more than 10,000 interested students each. Therefore, all these numbers denote a substantial trend across the engineering disciplines at IIT Madras, showing marked increase of AI and Data Analytics signifying unmistakable tilt toward the data-driven sphere.

Apparently, other courses also indicated shifts in their preference pattern. The Physics program received a considerable 26 percent of interest as it surged from 4,308 in 2023 to 5,443 in 2024. Interest remained stable in Biological Science, Engineering Design, Biological Engineering, and Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.

The success of this AI and Data Analytics program reflects IIT Madras’ readiness to introduce cutting-edge and industry-relevant education for its students. With this new program, IIT Madras stands its graduates in good stead to respond well to the changing needs in the technology landscape as more and more people demand expert AI professionals worldwide.
