From Labs to Life: IIT Delhi Grads Celebrate Big

New Delhi, August 2, 2025 – At its 56th Convocation on Friday, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi awarded degrees to 2,764 students in a variety of fields.Dr. Tessy Thomas, the “Missile Woman of India”and vice chancellor of the Noorul Islam Center for Higher Education,served as the event’s main guest.The event was held on the main campus.The chairman of the IIT Delhi’s Board of Governors,Harish Salve, presided over the proceedings.In his convocation speech, Dr. Thomas urged graduates to use their skills to effect change in the fields of technology, sustainability,and national development. At the convocation, the institute granted a record 530 doctoral degrees—the most in its history—thereby marking a significant achievement this year. Additionally, 488 students earned MTech degrees, 1,047 earned BTech degrees. Other degrees conferred include MSc by Research, MBA, dual degrees, MTech in Robotics, and MS in VLSI Design and MS in Artificial Intelligence. The event also featured the debut of the first group of Energy Engineering BTech graduates, proof of the institution’s growing focus on growing industries. The graduating class consisted of 43 international students from 20 different countries as well as 735 female students. It should be noted that the oldest graduate, Gopal Krishan Taneja, 63, obtained his doctorate; the youngest graduate, Chandan Godara, 20, completed his BTech in Civil Engineering. A number of students were honored for their academic success. Ankit Mondal from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering was awarded the President’s Gold Medal, presented for the highest CGPA in the BTech and Dual Degree programs. Devinder Kumar from Structural Engineering received the Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal; Director Gold Medal for all-around performance went to Jaskaran Singh Sodhi from Materials Science and Engineering. Shreyansh Gupta and Soumili Chakraborti, who kept a flawless CGPA of 10.0 in their respective MTech courses, were honored with the Perfect Ten Gold Medal. In her speech, Dr. Tessy Thomas praised IIT Delhi’s leadership in research and innovation and urged pupils to address current problems including decarbonization, artificial intelligence, clean energy, and digital equity. The institute’s expanding academic programs and dedication to experiential and interdisciplinary learning were highlighted by Director Prof. Rangan Banerjee. Besides the Distinguished Alumni Awards, the event also marked the start of a new Alumni Wall honoring the growing global influence of the institute in technology, science, and education.
