With an aim to boost global research and innovation in AI and Healthcare, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Coventry University Group (CUG), UK. The collaboration aims to formalise a strategic partnership to enhance research collaboration, academic mobility, and joint degree programs.

The MoU was exchanged during the visit of CUG’s senior research leadership to IIT Guwahati. This leadership visit was led by Prof. Richard Dashwood, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), who also discussed a joint Research Colloquium in hybrid mode involving experts from both CUG and IIT Guwahati.

In the presence of Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, the MoU was signed by Prof. Sumana Dutta, Dean, Alumni and External Relations, IIT Guwahati, and Prof. Richard Dashwood, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), CUG. The key focus area of this partnership is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science in Healthcare.

Highlighting IIT Guwahati’s focus on translational research and its collaboration with CUG, Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati, said, “Guwahati is emerging as a research centre. AIIMS and NIPER are our partners in our health sciences and technology programme, with a focus on medical devices and drug discovery. In addition, IIT Guwahati’s upcoming 400-bed research hospital will anchor active collaborations between medical professionals and scientists from the School of Health Sciences and Data Sciences.”

Key pillars of the IIT Guwahati-CUG collaboration include:

·         Academic and Research Mobility – Faculty and student exchange programs for the short term. This will also enable visiting faculty positions in the partner institutes.

·         Joint Doctoral Programs – The collaboration will introduce a dual-award PhD degree program under a joint supervision model.

·         AI for One Health – Aligning with India’s National AI Mission and Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, the collaboration will focus on integrating AI in Healthcare. This follows the AI Impact Pre-Summit Event organised by IIT Guwahati and Coventry University (20th January 2026), “AI for One Health: A Societal Perspective on Healthcare Integration in India.”

Speaking during his visit to IIT Guwahati, Prof. Richard Dashwood, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Coventry University, said, “Our research always comes with real-world change in mind, and working alongside institutions and partners in India, we can have a lasting impact on areas such as AI and healthcare.”

This partnership marks a significant milestone in Indo-UK academic relations, positioning both institutions at the forefront of the global technological transformation of healthcare.
