Prof. Mahesh Verma Leads Global AI Initiative to Transform Dental Education in India

Share

In a significant step towards integrating emerging technologies with healthcare education, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Mahesh Verma, is spearheading an international collaborative project focused on the integration of Artificial Intelligence in dental education and practice.

The project titled “Integrating Artificial Intelligence in Dental Education: Addressing Critical Global Oral Health Challenges through Transformative Capacity Building” is supported under the prestigious SPARC-UKIERI programme and represents a collaborative academic partnership between Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Dwarka and the Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), United Kingdom.

The initiative brings together global expertise with Prof. (Dr.) Vikrant Mohanty (MAIDS), Prof. (Dr.) Manu Mathur (QMUL, London), Dr. Ali Golkari ( QMUL, London) and Dr. Vartika Kathuria Monga (GGSIPU) serving as Lead Investigators.

The project aims to develop and institutionalize a specialized Artificial Intelligence module for third-year dental students and interns, preparing future dental professionals for technology-enabled clinical decision-making and public health delivery.

The training programme is currently being implemented across three premier government dental institutions in New Delhi,
Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) and ESIC Dental College & Hospital, Rohini.

Designed as a structured learning intervention, the module consists of four intensive contact training phases, each covering two thematic chapters combining conceptual learning with practical exposure.
Several expert sessions covering critical domains like use of Artificial Intelligence in Dentistry, Large Language Models (LLMs) and clinical applications, Wearable technologies and haptics in dental training, AI-based image analysis and diagnostics and Applications of AI in Public Health Dentistry along with hands-on exposure to Virtual Reality (VR)-enabled learning environments have been conducted at the selected institutions.

Speaking about the initiative, Prof. (Dr.) Mahesh Verma highlighted that Artificial Intelligence has the potential to bridge gaps in access, precision and preventive oral healthcare, particularly in countries with large population. Capacity-building initiatives such as this ensure that young dental professionals are equipped not only with clinical skills but also with digital competencies essential for next-generation healthcare systems.

This project will consolidate learning outcomes and contribute towards the development of a scalable AI-enabled curriculum framework for dental education in India.
