Why Critical Thinking, Creativity & Adaptability Need A Bigger Place In Education?

Artificial Intelligence has significantly changed the way in which we receive and process information, solve problems, and even live our daily lives. There are many possibilities for improving productivity and increasing efficiency in our lives. Yet, as technology grows more sophisticated and efficient, an important concern arises: how do we make sure human intelligence keeps growing along with it?

This is especially relevant to education. The process of learning should not only include receiving information and answering questions; it should also allow students to think critically, adapt to new conditions and become more creative in their approach. This is why critical thinking and adaptability hold an important position in modern education.

Generative AI technologies use existing information in order to provide the user with solutions and additional material. Even though they can assist us in processing information, we have to know how to evaluate the results and assess their value. Using generative AI effectively requires an understanding of its capabilities and limitations.

AI can potentially take away the necessity of independent thought from us. If we get used to using it as the source for all the answers to questions regardless of their justification, we will not have the opportunity to develop an opinion of our own. The information will be repeated rather than assessed and evaluated; this could limit the generation of new ideas. We need human beings to continue questioning assumptions and generating ideas since AI develops through the use of human knowledge.

With each transformation, from agrarian to industrial economy and from the latter to a digital economy, our way of dealing with information has been changing. However, nowadays, the issue is not the difficulty of gaining access to information but analysing it and using it properly.

In the age of an economy of attention, where information flows ceaselessly into us, competing for our attention, the ability to stop, analyse the information obtained, distinguish between true and false information, and form our own opinion accordingly has become essential. Critical thinking is about doubting the assumptions made and considering all the information available from different angles.

Creativity is also of equal importance because it allows people to go beyond the conventional answers and solutions. Creativity is not about being artistic but, about putting information together seeing things in new ways and finding solutions that others might miss. The fewer chances students get to use their creativity the less they build those skills.

Adaptability is important because the world will keep evolving and growing. What we know today and what we can do now might not be enough for the problems that will show up tomorrow. People need to be able to learn things forget old ways and learn again to adjust to situations that are not clear. They need to change their thinking as things, around them keep changing.

All these skills are closely connected with each other. Critical thinking enables us to assess data, creativity helps us generate ideas, and adaptability helps us use our knowledge differently. Analytical skills, creative skills, and resilience, flexibility, and agility are some of the skills that are highly sought after by employers, as mentioned in the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025. Besides being important for their role in employment, these skills have significance in terms of decision-making and problem-solving.

As such, critical thinking, creativity and adaptability are increasingly significant in relation to the growing role of AI. Artificial intelligence can be used to look at data, find patterns and make work faster; however; people need to decide which problems need to be fixed, which solutions are good enough and how the actions taken have changed things. Critical thinking enables people to evaluate information and critically question the premises, while creativity helps to come up with alternative ideas and approaches, and adaptability provides one with the ability to take action in case of changes.

Such qualities become increasingly necessary due to the fact that, living in the era of constant changes, knowledge and skills cannot stand still either. Critical thinking allows one to make sound decisions based on available knowledge, creativity helps one to come up with solutions for emerging issues, and adaptability allows one to learn from past experiences and face uncertainty. If all these skills are lacking, one will have difficulties implementing their knowledge when existing ways of dealing with the situation cease to be effective.

That is why critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability should become very important elements of the educational ecology. As the availability of information increases, it becomes even more important to be able to ask questions about this information, to use the existing information in order to come up with something new and to adapt to changes. These skills allow individuals not only to reproduce information but also to create something new, to make sound decisions and to find the best solutions to different issues.
