The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has now officially out the provisional MBBS seat matrix for the NEET UG 2025 counselling, which heralds the beginning of the medical admission season in India. With over 1.15 lakh MBBS seats this year, aspiring medical students can now get an idea of the way seats are distributed across states, universities, and quotas.
According to the latest updates, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has submitted the seat matrix in detail to MCC and it has come to light that a total of 1,15,900 MBBS seats will be filled in the first NEET UG 2025 counselling. The counselling round, to be held by MCC, has the representation of 775 medical colleges functioning in 35 Indian states and union territories. This inclusive seat matrix considers all medical college categories such as those covered under the All India Quota (AIQ), state quota, central universities, deemed universities, and top institutes such as AIIMS and JIPMER.
As per the MCC official announcement, the seat matrix of all the medical colleges of the nation has been made compulsory to follow. The seat allotment release gives the aspiring candidates a guiding map to utilize their chance in the national counselling process and make preparation accordingly.
The maximum number of MBBS seats has been declared by Uttar Pradesh in the states for the 2025 session. 12,325 seats will be offered by the state overall, which is a gradual boost to its medical infrastructure and educational capacity. Tamil Nadu is second with 12,000 seats that enjoys a healthy public and private medical educational infrastructure. Karnataka has also joined the ranks with 12,045 MBBS seats and is one of the top contributors to India’s medical educational infrastructure.
Maharashtra, with 11,844 seats, is a top contender for the first position, followed by Telangana, which occupies the first five places, with 8,915 seats. The number of high seats in these two states is due to the expansion of government and private medical colleges and ongoing investment in the education and healthcare industries.
The release of the seat matrix is as per the current NEET UG 2025 counselling calendar. NEET UG 2025 results were announced on June 14 and MCC will release registration for the counselling process in the second half of July. The first seat allotment will take place by the end of July. Then, all subsequent rounds such as upgradation of seats and fresh allotments will be organized from August to September.
15% of all seats come under All India Quota during counselling, and they are dealt with by the MCC. The remaining ones are either institutions or state quotas. Those who are allocated under round one can accept the seat, freeze it, or get upgradation if they are in anticipation of a better institution or course in the later rounds.
For those who are not selected in the first round, all is not lost. These candidates are requested to be part of subsequent rounds of counselling. Modifying preferences, shortlisting on college lists, and going through the merit lists and seat positions conscientiously can be magic to enhance prospects in subsequent rounds.
Once a seat has been allotted, the candidates need to download their allotment letter, which contains very important information like their NEET All India Rank, the quota to which they have been allotted (AIQ or state quota), the institution and course for which they are being allotted, and the category and allotted category. Any other remarks, if present, will be stated in this paper.
Starting with the second round, the allotment letter shall also show the candidate’s status of upgradation, if any new allotment is to be made as the case may be, and a summary of his/her presentation in the earlier rounds. This open-ended format is designed to make the process of counselling easy and to put forth candidates with all the information in one holistic form.
After the downloading of allotment letter is completed, the candidates are required to report at the allotted institution to finalize admission formalities and get their documents verified. Unsatisfied candidates can opt for the “Upgrade” option, re-entering the counselling pool for the subsequent round.
With more than a lakh MBBS seats to be filled this year and an open, phased counselling system available, NEET UG 2025 candidates are now closer to their dream of being medical doctors. The pre-counselling release of the seat matrix by MCC not only provides clarity but also enables students all over the country to have equal access to information while going through the extremely competitive admissions process.
