India’s higher education institutes have significantly improved their position in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject.
In the 2023 rankings, 44 Indian courses were ranked among the top 100, including IIT Bombay’s Mathematics programme at 92nd place, JNU’s sociology at 68th place, 10 entries from BITS Pilani, and two from OP Jindal University.
Of these 44 courses, 11 were declared Institutes of Eminence (IoE), which accounted for 44% of the 355 programmes offered by Indian universities that made it to the overall rankings.
The QS noted that India produces the world’s fourth-most research, behind China, the United States, and the United Kingdom. However, India lags behind in citation count, with only 15% of its publications cited in top journals from 2017 to 2021.
Nevertheless, the Indian universities performed well in Computer Science, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Business Studies, and Physics.
