IIT Delhi Launches New BS Chemistry Programme

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has announced the launch of a new four-year undergraduate programme — Bachelor of Science (BS) in Chemistry — which will commence from the 2025 academic session. This announcement, made on Sunday, June 1, marks a significant addition to the academic offerings at one of India’s premier engineering institutes. The course will be available to students who qualify the JEE Advanced 2025 examination and make their selections through the JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) 2025 portal.

What sets this new programme apart is that it is the first BS in Chemistry to be offered at IIT Delhi, a move that reflects the institute’s growing emphasis on interdisciplinary education and research. With this programme, IIT Delhi aims to bridge the existing gaps between pure science and engineering disciplines by integrating both domains into a holistic curriculum. According to Professor S. Nagendran, Head of the Department of Chemistry at IIT Delhi, the course is designed to introduce multidisciplinarity at the entry level while still ensuring that students receive a comprehensive grounding in core chemistry concepts. He pointed out that a recurring issue in academia and industry is that engineering graduates often lack in-depth knowledge of fundamental sciences, which limits their ability to engage in rigorous scientific research. Conversely, traditional pure science graduates sometimes miss out on the practical and application-oriented aspects that engineering education offers.

To address this divide, the BS in Chemistry programme has been structured in a unique manner. During the initial two semesters, students will follow a curriculum common to all first-year BTech students at IIT Delhi. This phase will include foundational courses in science and basic engineering principles, helping students to build a strong base that is both academically rich and technically robust. This alignment with the BTech structure also aims to foster a shared academic culture across disciplines, facilitating better collaboration and mutual understanding among students from varied fields.

The programme will begin to diverge from the BTech route from the second year, focusing deeply on core chemistry subjects. Students will engage with various branches of chemistry, such as organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry. By the third year, the curriculum becomes even more interdisciplinary, incorporating courses from other domains along with research-driven modules. This integration of research at the undergraduate level is particularly significant, as it encourages students to develop an investigative mindset early in their academic journey. The fourth year of the programme continues this emphasis on research and applied knowledge, preparing students not only for academic careers but also for various industrial roles.

Further enhancing the scope of the programme, students will also have the option to pursue a Minor in another department alongside their BS in Chemistry. This flexibility allows students to tailor their academic journey according to their interests and career aspirations, fostering a more versatile skill set. Professor Ravi P. Singh, the programme coordinator, elaborated on the vision behind the course, emphasizing that it seeks to train students to not only understand molecular fundamentals but also to apply this knowledge through an engineer’s problem-solving lens. The ultimate goal is to empower graduates to tackle global challenges using chemistry-based solutions that are both innovative and practical.

The career prospects for students completing this course are broad and promising. Graduates can look forward to roles in a variety of sectors, including pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, advanced materials, manufacturing, defence, oil and gas, chemical consulting, automotive industries, and the petrochemical sector. The programme is thus designed not just to educate, but to equip students with the tools to contribute meaningfully to real-world challenges.

By launching this BS in Chemistry programme, IIT Delhi is responding to the growing need for interdisciplinary talent in science and engineering. It reflects the evolving nature of scientific education, where traditional boundaries between disciplines are increasingly blurred, and where solving complex, real-world problems requires both depth and breadth of knowledge.
