Conducted by College Vidya, the survey, with a sample size of 90,000 students, revealed that half of the participants expressed significant worries over fraudulent practices in the online education space. These concerns are primarily centered around the security of online payments, the authenticity of degrees, and the validity of job placement claims made by various educational institutions.
The survey found that 50% of students make it a priority to verify the approval status of online programs by the University Grants Commission (UGC) before considering enrollment. Additionally, 30% of students expressed hesitation in making online payments without first ensuring the legitimacy of the institution. Furthermore, 20% of respondents questioned the veracity of claims made by online education providers about the job placements and career outcomes for their graduates.
This survey’s findings reflect broader trends in student decision-making when it comes to online education. Increasingly, students are taking precautionary measures to safeguard themselves from potential fraud. The data also shows a rise in efforts to verify the accreditation of institutions and the programs they offer. As a result, around 80% of students now check the UGC’s Distance Education Bureau (DEB) website to confirm whether the online program they are considering is recognized and complies with official guidelines.
This trend follows a series of warnings issued by the UGC regarding fraudulent online programs. In line with these guidelines, certain academic disciplines, including Engineering, Medical Sciences, Law, Architecture, and Pharmacy, are prohibited from being offered through online or Open and Distance Learning (ODL) formats. These restrictions are designed to uphold educational standards and protect the interests of students. They are part of a wider effort to combat deceptive practices in the burgeoning field of online education.
In light of these concerns, there has been a shift in how students approach the enrollment process for online courses. Many students are now more diligent in checking institutional recognition and verifying placement records before making financial commitments. Along with these measures, the recent introduction of a new requirement for students enrolling in recognized ODL programs to generate a UGC-DEB ID adds an extra layer of security to the process.
