The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has declared the marks of recommended candidates for the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination I, 2024. Candidates who appeared for the exam can now check their scores on the official UPSC website. This marks a significant milestone for aspirants who have been eagerly awaiting the results and further clarifications on their performance in one of India’s most prestigious defense recruitment processes.
The marks are also available in the newly released PDF document on the UPSC portal, which provides the details of candidates who cleared the examination successfully. The results for the final CDS I exam were announced on January 8, 2025. A total of 590 candidates have been recommended. Out of these, 470 are men and 120 are women, selected for enrollment in various courses commencing in April 2025. The selected candidates will join the 35th Short Service Commission Women (Non-Technical) course and the 121st Short Service Commission (Men) course.
While the results may represent the merit-based selection of candidates, one should not fail to notice that the outcomes of the medical examination are not reflected in the merit list. The UPSC declared that the candidature of all the selected candidates is provisional subject to further verification. The candidates’ date of birth and educational qualifications will be separately verified by the Army headquarters prior to the admission of each candidate to their respective academies.
The Recruitment and Selection Process
The UPSC CDS recruitment process is very rigorous and involves stages of examination for testing the candidate’s potential for only the fittest to finally qualify. This is followed by a written exam that forms the first phase. Candidates are assessed in three subjects: English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics. Each subject is assigned a duration of two hours, and the exam is conducted for those applying to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), and Air Force Academy (AFA). Candidates applying for the Officers Training Academy (OTA) are only required to take the English and General Knowledge sections.
Following the written examination, candidates who qualify are called for the Service Selection Board (SSB) interview. This stage involves a rigorous assessment process, including a screening test, psychological evaluations, group tasks, and a personal interview. These assessments are designed to evaluate a candidate’s leadership qualities, mental acuity, and ability to perform under pressure—key attributes for military service.
Candidates who clear the SSB interview are subjected to a rigorous medical examination to ascertain their suitability for military training and service. Only those candidates who successfully clear all the stages are eligible for final selection, which is done on the basis of a combined score of the written exam and SSB interview.
The final stage of the CDS recruitment process is rigorous training at the respective academies, including the IMA, INA, AFA, and OTA. These academies are known for their discipline, physical endurance programs, and leadership training, which prepare cadets for a challenging career in the armed forces.
Key Highlights of the CDS I 2024 Results
The CDS I 2024 recruitment drive seeks to fill in the total vacancies for all the courses as provided by the services as 457. This year’s final recommended list is over and above the vacancies, considering the high merits standards and that of the stringent competition during selection. Women candidates are making good progress as indicated with 120 being selected in the 35th Short Service Commission Women (Non-Technical) course.
The registration for the examination took place from December 20, 2023 to January 9, 2024. Now, after these two rounds-the written examination and SSB interview-the results are out. They were announced a few days back.
