This agreement will enable students of BS Data Science and Applications at IIT Madras who fulfill eligibility requirements to complete part or all the credits of their programme at IIT Palakkad. In turn, undergraduate students from IIT Palakkad will have the opportunity to attend courses in Data Science and Programming as provided by IIT Madras’s innovative BS program.
The IIT Madras has introduced a four-year BS in Data Science and Applications programme from June 2020 as a mode of meeting the fast-growing requirement for data science professionals. The course is taken through a hybrid model, an online delivery combined with an in-person assessment with respect to quality, hence very flexible and viable. Currently, over 30,000 students are enrolled and actively pursuing this course.
This collaboration has been one of the most important steps for resource and expertise integration from two of India’s premier institutes. Students will have a multidisciplinary perspective and avail the educational excellence of both IIT Madras and IIT Palakkad, said the officer from IIT Madras.
Apart from the exchange programs for students, summer immersion, and research internships, the MoU also provides visions for joint initiatives in other forms. Both institutes share the same commitment to innovations and research and to making the overall experience of education better.
Part of a Broader Vision
This is one of the several collaborations that IIT Madras has undertaken in order to provide its students with the opportunity of variety in their modes of learning. Similar collaborations have been made with IIT Gandhinagar, IIIT Hyderabad and Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) too. Such collaborations have provided the BS programme students of IIT Madras to take campus courses, which extended the spectrum of study for these students.
According to Dr V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, “The intention is to make such world-class education accessible and interdisciplinary. Such initiatives enable students to interact with peers from other institutes, then really get a better perspective and thus are more well-equipped to handle realities.”.
IIT Madras and IIT Palakkad will pool their resources and expertise and set the benchmark for collaborative education in India while providing cutting-edge exposure to data science and related fields to students. This is an important step forward toward an advanced academic ecosystem better abreast of changing demands from industry and academia alike.
