Breaking Barriers: Women Supporting Women on International Women’s Day

Share

For the past two decades as a media professor, I have observed and participated in numerous discussions about International Women’s Day. Year after year, we emphasize women’s empowerment, freedom, and breaking societal norms. Yet, one crucial aspect remains overlooked—women supporting women. It is time we redefine empowerment by encouraging a culture of unity, encouragement, and mutual growth among women.

The Need for Harmony

Women have long fought for freedom from oppression, inequality, and discrimination. However, another battle exists within—the struggle for freedom from jealousy, hatred, and unhealthy competition. True empowerment begins when women lift each other up instead of pulling each other down. When women stand together, they create an unshakable force capable of driving societal transformation. Whether in professional settings, academic institutions, or personal relationships, there is often a feeling of rivalry instead of collaboration. The time has come to change this narrative. Empowerment should not be about surpassing other women but about supporting each other and rising together.

Accelerate Action: The 2025 Theme

This year’s theme, ‘Accelerate Action,’ is a powerful call to move beyond words and into impactful strategies that advance women’s development. While governments and organizations implement policies for gender equity, real change happens when women actively participate in uplifting one another.

We must accelerate action in our everyday interactions. Mentorship, encouragement, and advocacy should become part of our daily lives. When women mentor young girls, support female colleagues, and celebrate the achievements of their peers, they contribute to a cycle of empowerment that benefits everyone.

The Path Forward

Imagine a world where every woman feels supported, heard, and valued by her peers. A world where young girls grow up seeing women who celebrate each other’s successes instead of tearing them down. This vision is possible, but it requires intentional efforts from all of us.

On this Women’s Day, let us pledge not just to fight for gender equality but also to build a culture of mutual respect and support. The greatest gift we can give each other is the assurance that no woman stands alone.

Let us create a world free from bias, stereotypes, and discrimination by challenging external forces and reflecting on our own attitudes. Accelerate action towards a future where empowerment is synonymous with unity. Because when women support women, the world becomes a better place for all. Instead of competing, let us collaborate. Instead of criticizing, let us celebrate. Instead of judging, let us support.
