Established by O. P. Jindal Global University (JGU) in a historic effort to increase academic engagement between India and the United States, the Motwani Jadeja Institute for American Studies (MJIAS) is now open. Hoping to be a premier center for research, teaching, and policy conversation on American society, politics, culture, and international relations, the institute was founded with a significant Rs 44 crore. The Motwani Jadeja Institute for American Studies owes its existence to the kind philanthropic support of technologist, businessman, and investor Asha Jadeja Motwani. Having spent years working to strengthen India-US relations, Jadeja wishes the institute would provide Indian students, academics, and legislators a better grasp of the historical evolution, institutional institutions, and worldwide influence of the United States. The institute was formally unveiled during a grand event on the JGU grounds in Sonipat, Haryana, attended by government officials, university heads, diplomats, distinguished academics from India and around the world. Keynote speeches celebrating the need of cultural understanding and the strategic partnership between the two countries were given during the event. Motwani underlined the need of promoting informed engagement with the United States in her remarks. She underlined that as India’s international influence grows, there has to be a comparable intellectual framework to evaluate and respond to American policies, stories, and cultural changes. She predicted hopefully that the institute would grow to be a hub for outstanding research and innovative policymaking that would benefit both countries. Vice-Chancellor of JGU Professor C. Raj Kumar praised the creation of the new institute as a “historical landmark” in the institution’s commitment to worldwide education and research and thanked the endowment. MJIAS, he claims, will offer a wide range of interdisciplinary activities including undergraduate and graduate courses, grants, student exchange programs, and collaborative research projects with American universities. Furthermore, Professor Kumar noted, the institute will soon host an yearly “India-US Dialogue Forum” to promote interaction between academics, diplomats, corporate leaders, and students from both countries. From both Indian and American points of view, the platform will cover pressing world challenges including climate change, digital government, global health, and democratic resiliency. The academic structure of the institute will comprise themed research centers focusing on American politics and foreign policy, US-India relations, American literature and culture, innovation and entrepreneurship in the US, and race and diversity in American society. With Ivy League and other elite American institutions, the institute will have an active academic exchange program; its faculty will comprise academics from foreign universities, including those in the United States. Academic events, research, faculty positions, infrastructure projects, scholarships, and funding from a Rs 44 crore endowment will be used. Separate building will be constructed to house lecture halls, faculty offices, a dedicated library, and meeting rooms. Beginning the following academic year, the institution expects to start its academic activities. The opening of the MJIAS coincides with a watershed moment in India-US relations. Strategic partnership, cultural contact, academic exchange, and bilateral commerce between the two countries have all shown an exponential rise during the last ten years. Organizations such MJIAS are expected to help close policy-perception gaps and advance mutual understanding as over 200,000 Indian students study there, thereby enhancing cultural interaction. Educational experts have praised the decision as a major first step in enabling Indian students to have a sophisticated view of America. Better business practices, cross-cultural understanding, and diplomacy are expected from the institution in an always changing world. Because of its commitment to excellence and strong philanthropic base, the Motwani Jadeja Institute for American Studies puts JGU at the front of worldwide studies in India. The institute vows from the start to be a vibrant platform for discussion, education, and cooperation between the two largest democracies in the world.
