NMC Invites Applications for New Medical Colleges, MBBS Seats 2026–27

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a fresh announcement inviting applications for the establishment of new medical sodalities offering undergraduate programs and for the expansion of MBBS seat capacity in existing institutions for the academic time 2026–27. The move is aimed at strengthening India’s medical education structure while maintaining quality norms.
According to the announcement, operations will be accepted simply through the sanctioned NMC website, buttressing the Commission’s drive towards a completely digital and transparent blessing process.
Online Operation Window and Timeline
The NMC has specified that the online operation window for setting up new medical sodalities or adding undergraduate seat input will remain open from December 29, 2025, to January 28, 2026. Institutions planning to share in the 2026–27 academic cycle must cleave rigorously to this timeline, as operations submitted beyond the deadline won’t be considered. The Commission has made it clear that offline operations won’t be entertained under any circumstances, emphasizing the significance of following the specified digital process.
This timeline provides institutions with a one-month window to prepare and submit their operations, upload the needed attestation, and complete the figure payment process. The NMC has advised aspirants to begin medications beforehand to avoid last-nanosecond specialized or procedural issues.
Compass of the announcement and eligible aspirants
The announcement covers two broad orders of aspirants. The first includes institutions proposing to establish new medical sodalities offering undergraduate medical education. The alternate order comprises medical sodalities seeking authorization to increase their MBBS seat input. All aspirants, irrespective of order, are needed to misbehave with the applicable regulations, Minimum Standard Conditions (MSR) documents, guidelines, and leaflets issued by the NMC and other competent authorities from time to time.
For the academic time 2026–27, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), which functions under the NMC, has kept a specific provision of the UG Medical Education Minimum Standard Conditions (MSR), 2023, in latency. This temporary relaxation is intended to grease a smoother expansion process while the broader nonsupervisory frame continues to be executed.
Cap on MBBS Seats and Population Morals
One of the crucial interpretations in the announcement relates to the outside input of MBBS scholars. Colleges applying for an increase in seats must ensure that their total approved input doesn’t exceed 150 MBBS scholars. This limit applies from the academic time 2025–26 onward and continues to be applicable for operations submitted for 2026–27.
At the same time, the NMC has reiterated that medical sodalities must continue to cleave to the long-standing norm of 100 MBBS seats per 10 lakh population in the separate state or Union Territory. This population-grounded criterion is designed to ensure a balanced distribution of medical education capacity across the country and to help inordinate attention to seats in specific regions.
Digital-Only Operation Process
The NMC has laid strong emphasis on a streamlined, digital-only operation process. Institutions proposing to establish new medical sodalities are needed to register on the designated NMC gate using a valid dispatch ID and produce a secure word. Being medical sodalities seeking an increase in MBBS seats must log in using their NMC-registered dispatch ID, ensuring the durability and authenticity of institutional records.
Once logged in, the operation form will open automatically, allowing aspirants to enter details, upload obligatory documents, and do the figure payment. An operation number will be generated only after successful submission of the form, completion of document uploads, and payment of the specified figure. This operation number will serve as a unique reference for all future correspondence with the Commission.
freights, attestation, and compliance
While the announcement doesn’t detail the exact figure structure, the NMC has advised aspirants to relate to the sanctioned website for comprehensive information regarding applicable freights. Institutions are anticipated to ensure that all documents submitted align with the specified MSR morals and nonsupervisory conditions, as any distinction may lead to rejection or detention in processing.
The Commission has also emphasized that the same registered dispatch ID and word must be used for all unborn logins, pressing the significance of maintaining accurate digital credentials throughout the blessing cycle.
Strengthening Medical Education Capacity
Through this announcement, the NMC aims to balance the binary objects of expanding India’s medical education capacity and maintaining invariant quality norms. By inviting operations well in advance for the 2026–27 academic time, the Commission seeks to give institutions ample time for planning, compliance, and structure development, eventually contributing to a more robust and accessible healthcare education system across the country.
