Why Are School Dropout Rates Rising In Some States Despite Free Education?

Free education has helped millions of children step into a classroom, but it hasn’t been enough to keep them there. Across several Indian states, thousands of children are still leaving school before completing their studies — and it’s becoming a growing concern for teachers, parents, and education experts alike.
Many assume that once school fees are removed from the equation, the problem should solve itself. But the reality on the ground tells a different story. For most struggling families, the real burden isn’t tuition — it’s everything else that comes with sending a child to school. Uniforms, books, school bags, transport costs, and the everyday pressures of running a household all add up. In low-income families, children are often pulled out of school and pushed into work to help support the family, and once that happens, education quietly slips down the list of priorities.
Teachers point to several other factors driving this trend as well. Some students lose interest simply because they struggle to keep up with lessons or don’t feel any real connection to what they’re being taught. In rural areas, schools are often located far from home, making regular attendance a genuine challenge. Girls, in particular, face an additional set of hurdles — safety concerns, household responsibilities, and early marriage frequently force them out of the classroom altogether.
According to education experts, free education alone was never going to be enough to fix this. What students actually need is better school infrastructure, financial support, career guidance, and access to counselling. And none of this works in isolation — parents and schools need to work together to keep children motivated and engaged in their education.
Free education is undeniably an important first step, but it isn’t the complete answer. Unless students get the right support both inside the classroom and at home, dropout rates are unlikely to fall — and that has consequences far beyond individual futures. It affects the country’s development as a whole.
