Newton School of Technology (NST) has reported a 98.3 per cent internship placement rate among eligible second-year students of its Pune Class of 2028, with nearly one-third of the internships secured at artificial intelligence and data companies.

The results, published in NST’s Internship Report 2026, cover a batch of 313 students pursuing computer science and artificial intelligence at Ajeenkya DY Patil University (ADYPU) in Pune. Students secured internship opportunities across 173 employers, working in areas ranging from AI model evaluation and satellite navigation to drone technology and software development.

The institute said the results marked its second consecutive cohort with an internship placement rate above 93 per cent. Its earlier NCR cohort, comprising 104 students, had recorded a placement rate of 93.07 per cent.

According to NST, the latest internship figures were independently validated by Sorab S. Engineer & Co., Chartered Accountants, which examined supporting documents, including offer letters and recruiter communications, in accordance with Indian Placement Reporting Standards, Revision 2.2.

AI and data companies accounted for nearly one in three internships, making them the largest employment category for the batch. Another 79 students secured opportunities with software, SaaS and technology services companies. Students also found internships in financial technology, education, manufacturing, healthcare and other sectors.

The average monthly stipend stood at Rs 23,149, while the median was Rs 20,000. The highest monthly-equivalent stipend reported was Rs 1.9 lakh.

Siddharth Maheshwari, Co-founder of Newton School of Technology, said the growing use of artificial intelligence was changing the skills companies expected from young engineers.

“AI is changing what young engineers need to know and what companies expect them to contribute. We want our students to understand that change through work, not only through coursework,” he said.

Maheshwari added that students were already contributing to projects involving AI model evaluation and other emerging technologies.

The report also highlighted some of the projects undertaken by students during their internships.

Birajit Saikia worked with US-based AfterQuery on infrastructure used to evaluate AI models, including testing pipelines and benchmarks. Raman Pandey worked at VyomIC, analysing satellite-signal interference and challenges related to satellite navigation.

At Drona Aviation, Devendra Mishra developed browser-based drone controls in about 20 days, connecting a React interface with drone hardware through real-time commands.

Another student, Tushar Verma, contributed to JSON Schema’s format-validation test suite through Google Summer of Code while also working as a backend engineering intern at Mugafi.

Apart from internships, 17 students from the Pune batch opted for NST’s approved entrepreneurship pathway, choosing to work on their own business ventures.

The institute said student-led ventures under its wider Startup Foundry programme had collectively generated more than Rs 1 crore in revenue. The programme supports students in developing products, testing business ideas and preparing ventures for investment.

The internship results come at a time when AI is changing entry-level recruitment and workplace expectations. According to Deloitte India’s Campus Workforce Trends 2026 report, 35 per cent of surveyed organisations said AI adoption had created new entry-level roles or skill requirements, compared with 21 per cent in FY25.

NST said its internship programme was intended to give students practical industry experience before they entered the third year of their undergraduate studies.
