Odisha Forms Panel To Align Curriculum With NEP 2020

Share

A big step has been taken by the Odisha government to bring its education system in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 through the formation of a 16-member state steering committee. This committee will be headed by Prof. Nityananda Pradhan, a retired principal of the Regional Institute of Education (RIE) Bhopal. It will draft a State Curriculum Framework (SCF) that adheres to the NEP’s tenets and yet reflects the local contextualization.

The NEP 2020 brought in the transformative 5+3+3+4 structure to supersede the existing 10+2 system. This model seeks to focus more on a more holistic and age-appropriate method of education rather than the more fragmented 10+2, focusing on children’s developmental needs at different levels of growth. This age group encompasses pre-primary and Grades 1 and 2 for children in the age bracket of 3 to 8 years. Learning here is encouraged by play and activity-based pedagogy methods. The system looks to instill a base that will eventually facilitate lifelong learning by using versatile, multi-level approaches to pedagogy inspired by ECCE.

After the foundation stage, there is the preparatory stage for Grades 3 to 5, the middle stage for Grades 6 to 8, and the secondary stage for Grades 9 to 12. This system will ensure that education progresses in phases, addressing cognitive and emotional development at every level. The NEP aims at developing critical thinking, creativity, and practical skills among learners in order to better equip them for the increasingly dynamic world.

The School and Mass Education Department issued a notification which highlighted the government’s commitment to making the educational framework of Odisha comply with the national guidelines but at the same time respect local educational needs and cultural diversity. Prof. Pradhan, being the chairperson of the steering committee, will work along with education experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to ensure that the curriculum framework not only complies with the NEP but is also customized to suit the specific challenges and opportunities of Odisha.

An additional secretary from the School and Mass Education Department will be a member-convenor of the committee. Coordination will be easier, and its objectives will be executed with less hassle. The department said it was confident that the work of the committee would open the door to a robust curriculum that meets the aspirations of learners, educators, and parents.

Odisha has been fairly proactive in initiating the NEP 2020. The State Government, within November of last year, also declared that from the current year, all government universities and autonomous colleges would use the guidelines related to NEP. This declaration was a pivotal step for a state on education reform journey into a uniform system of education progress, filling any gap between education at school to higher education.

The steering committee’s formation underscores the state’s dedication to making education more inclusive, accessible, and relevant to the demands of the 21st century. By integrating play-based learning in the early years and gradually transitioning to skill development and specialization in later stages, the NEP seeks to cultivate a generation of learners equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to contribute meaningfully to society.

Efforts made in Odisha have been in step with the vision of transforming the structure of the Indian education system as a whole. NEP 2020 focuses on a learner-centric vision with experiential competency-based education rather than a mere rote learning model. Through this reform, it aims to create an education system within Odisha that fosters creativity, innovation, and global citizenship without losing its roots and links with the Indian value system and traditions.

The work of the steering committee in this ambitious state journey will significantly shape the course of education for Odisha, as it collaborates with NEP and tackles local needs for ushering into an era of educational excellence and equity. In this manner, every child in the state gets an opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
