The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has announced changes to the examination centres for GATE 2025, while IIT Delhi announced changes to the examination centres for JAM 2025. The changes come in response to logistical concerns arising from the massive influx of devotees expected during the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj. The Prayagraj centres for both exams scheduled early in February have been shifted to Lucknow so that operations could run smoothly and easily accessible for candidates.
GATE 2025 is scheduled to be conducted at IIT Roorkee from 1, 2, 15 and 16 February, 2025 and the JAM 2025 by IIT Delhi on 2nd of February, 2025. Interestingly, the two institutions recently issued a notice stating that this was done following complaints from several candidates who feared they would face problems in reaching the examination centers in Prayagraj considering the Mahakumbh Pilgrimage is going to be attended by millions of devotees. The influx is expected to cause heavy traffic congestion, overcrowding, and possible disruptions in transportation, which will make it difficult for the candidates to reach their respective examination venues on time.
Recognizing these issues, IIT Roorkee and IIT Delhi have agreed to relocate the examination centers to Lucknow. The official notification has stated that five GATE 2025 examination centers and four JAM 2025 centers have been relocated. Affected candidates have received new admit cards, which are downloadable on the respective official websites: gate2025.iitr.ac.in for GATE and jam2025.iitd.ac.in for JAM.
This decision was brought in with great necessity, with respect to this notice, where students could come out for examinations peacefully without creating disturbances or further distress. In consideration of Mahakumbh festivity grounds lying in Prayagraj, the logistical troubles that occurred, the board feared would ruin this examination procedure as well. To avoid possible pandemonium the board resolved its centers shift at Lucknow: it’s an important city equipped with sound road transport as well as suitable housing facilities.
Candidates have been asked to make sure to go through all the details in the new admit card, especially regarding the examination centers and the respective timings. An admit card is a mandatory entry pass to any examination hall. Candidates will need to bring with them a printout of their admit card on the day of the examination and a valid photo ID. Candidates have also been requested to arrive at the concerned examination center before time so as not to get into last-minute hassles.
For GATE aspirants, the change in venue is particularly crucial, given the importance of the examination for postgraduate admissions and public sector job opportunities. JAM candidates, who are vying for admission to master’s programs in prestigious institutions, also face high stakes. Therefore, the smooth conduct of these examinations is a priority for both IIT Roorkee and IIT Delhi.
The Mahakumbh is one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, which occurs every 12 years. It holds immense spiritual significance for devotees. The government and local authorities in Prayagraj have been making extensive preparations to accommodate the millions of pilgrims expected to arrive during the festival. Security measures, traffic management, and public amenities are being enhanced to ensure a safe and orderly event. However, the sheer scale of the Mahakumbh makes it challenging to manage other large-scale activities such as national-level examinations.
The decision to relocate examination centres reflects the proactive approach taken by IIT Roorkee and IIT Delhi in addressing the concerns of candidates. By shifting the centres to Lucknow, the institutes aim to provide a conducive environment for candidates to focus on their exams without worrying about external disruptions.
Candidates have been advised to look into the details and updates about GATE 2025 and JAM 2025 in their respective websites. The institutions have assured candidates that they would take all precautionary measures that would ensure that the examination takes place without much hassle and had requested the candidates to cooperate to abide by the updated guidelines issued.
The dates for the examination are nearing and the candidates must make advance bookings for their traveling and stay at Lucknow. The shifting of the examination centres itself depicts how one has to be adaptable to a decision to handle massive events. In all probability, this swift response by IIT Roorkee and IIT Delhi will give a much-needed breather to thousands of students so that the exams could be held smoothly even at the time of Mahakumbh.
